Some while back we tried to achieve this strain by crossing a Rhode Island Red roo with my pure bred Plymouth rock hen's & out of the 14 egg's incubated (one did'nt hatch) I have 11 hen's & 2 roo's, & although they were all the same feather colour at hatching (Except leg & beak colour) the 2 roo's are now typical Plymouth Rock colour's & the girl's are now very much Rhode Island Red's & very dark red, my question is: what do I do next to achieve this red barred variety, I should also point out that, the 2 roo's are huge yet the hen's are half the roo size, all are 13 week's old, thank's in advance.

I would try to cross the daughters with a rock roo it may be that the colour will change to a red stripe depends on the strength in the girls colouring good luck Trev

Thank's Trev, I shall look around for a new Plymouth Rock Roo, as all my roo's are related, in the mean time I will keep the hen's penned on thier own.

you will need to do a brother sister mating but hatch a lot then select the one's that have the colouring you want. a high % will come out straight barred colour and a low % red barred

Thank's cannakid,From the hatching I got 11 hen's all obviously Rhode Island's (Very red now) & a couple of roo's of the typical barred colouring, should I put the better roo (Brother) back across the hen's ? You will have to ignore my ignorance as im new at chook husbandry ;D

Thank's cannakid, I have 2 really healthy looking roo's (Brother's of the hen's) & given that I have 11 hen's ,do you think one roo will be able to service them all. I am currently building their new run & will probably be putting them together within the next two week's.

It may be on the border up to 10 is the general rule , you may need to moniter how they are with the hens if they treat the hens to ruff then pull 1 of them out.
