Anyone got any advice on how to keep my poor chickens from becoming BBQd in this heat? We got to 46' the other day and no relief in sight for at least another 5 days! Have been changing their water 4 times a day, which is not only annoying but huge problem as scheme water is boiling hot by 3pm, so am carting rainwater from house with ice blocks in it. Husband is concerned I am losing my mind (too late!) as I spend nearly all day carting water and ice cream containers of ice to the chooks and the ducks. Are misting kits any good or will they kill my chooks quicker? Happy New Year to you all!

Hey Belle
We have had some high temps too although not as high as you. I have been hosing my girls down five or six times a day. I try to make sure there is a nice cool wet patch for them to lay down in. The ice blocks are a great idea. Don't worry about hubby, you will find him joining in soon enough. Despite all of my efforts I still lost two of my cochin girls today in the 39 degree heat. Keep up the great effort and long live the chook lovers.

I had to put up shade cloth as well as use sprinklers. I've lost 8 to heat 3 to snake bites and 25 to cocci this summer, I think the extra humidity this summer is worse than just the temp.

Belle, I noticed in Bunning's the other day, that they sell very fine spray attomiser's which are generally speaking used in a lot of outdoor restaurant dining area's, & you dont get soaked either, from memory I think they were $40 for a set of 5, basically you hang them from the roof, &/or the brim of your garden umberella & hook them up to a garden hose, Im considering this option for my girl's, just a thought...

Need to plant lots of trees and shrubs for shade for times like this port wine magnolias ar good for shade and flowering ash trees as they are evergreen and not messy and the spray misters are good or just hosed them down every hour Bunnings have portable gazebos for $30.00 for shade give ducks swimming water in shade and hose down.
