as the title says,
how are your chookens coping with the heat (and you for that matter hehe)
have just been up to hte chook yard to water the birds and their ground, and watching them paddle around in the water. algae is growing very fast in my water atm with this heat.............so have to keep an eye on the water don't want them to get blue green algae poisoning.

I'm tipping the water 2-3times a day (I have auto waterers) same thing ,trying to keep as clean as possible. Iv added extra bicarb to the 1000 ltr tank as well as adding some natural salts and minerals ...very dilute . I have sprinklers (off come on for 10 mins at around 3pm to cool them down on hot days . Chicks were a problem as I had some in a brooder . They dont need the heat at the moment as the Shed/workshop is so hot ,poor darlings. Iv set up a fan for them... My brooder boxes are all setup in portable cots so they can run around when they get bigger . I removed the brooder box and set the fan to blow through the cot little babies line up in front of the fan with there little wings out ...so cute . I normally turn the fan of at night but tonight maybe not .its still so hot out there.

has been pretty hard for me atm as im working most of the day so cant really be at home to cool them down through out the day like i normally would, but all on auto water so that helps i know they will have enough water for the day to drink. unfortunatly i lost a pekin bantam hen yesterday to the heat i was very dissapointed (in my head im thinking if i hadnt been at work i could have saved her) she was a young cuckoo (one of two i brought, for some new fresh lines for breeding, and she was the better type out of the two) i have only hatched off 5 chicks from her so im not happy at all its hard to find pekins in my area and she was such a cutie. hoping i dont have to go home to another today.

Sorry to hear that Trev and Chickita that your day was a trying and upsetting one. I am back to school next week and I have been trial running large tubbs of ice in the chooks water. They seem to keep the water cool for a few hours and add extra water when the ice melts. So this will be my plan for the hot summer days. Empty large yogurt containers are a good size for ice blocks. Cheers Linda

Sorry to hear to all those that lost chooks , touch wood I haven't lost any yet and its in the 40's here. Trev there is a bonding agent you can put on before the main glue to help it stick, but normally you can't put pressure on the glue joints for 24 hours( pain).

My poor chickens have been gasping in the heat. I have been changing their water regularly. Have a broody on a dozen eggs at the moment and she has all the eggs half out from her. I've filled her little water bottle with ice cubes so she has cool water (again changed and refilled with ice 3 times so far.)
I put several 4 litre containers of water in the freeze4r last night and tipped these frozen blocks into the sheeps water and separate chickens water bowl. They all love the cool water and I feel it has helped the poor darlings.
