Price wise I think the hovabator's are the best. They are easy to use (i'm on my second hatch now and feel confisdent about them now). I think for around $300 you get a 42 egg auto turn with a fan. (brookfield poultry i have found to be the best suppliers of these, they have a huuuge range!)
There's also other great brands but im not familiar with them, and i think they are a bit more pricey but i've heard they are great.
An experienced guy told me the main things you should look for are auto turning/rolling and fan forced (the still air incubators dont have as good hatch rates as those with fans).
Good luck and i hope you can convince your other half to let you get one. Didn't take mine long when he realised we could get some breeds he liked and hatch them ourselves... hehe

I started out with a foam bellsouth incubator, manual turn and no fan, it was cheaper than most, but as squeak stated, the hatch rate was irratic, but I think that also had a lot to do with how the outside temp was. Have now got a covatutto 120 egg with fan and semi auto turn, and a Brinsea 190 egg, has fan and auto turn, the covatutto has the heating element at the bottom and when the chicks hatch and do their business, it actually shorts out the power in the house if it lands on the element. Thats a pain. The brinsea I find is really good as the whole door is glass, so when the chicks are hatching, you can see everything and get really good hatch rates from both. Hope you are able to get one, as you will get a lot of enjoyment from it (and chickies hopefully)
