We had 3 x Silkies (Hens) lined up for our 4 year old daughter with everything ready to go. Only to find out today, they have yet to hatch!! She is devastated so we have decided to hunt down another 3 to get them asap! All 3 need to be different to tell them apart and all layers! We are after pullets, about 5/6 weeks old so we can have them at home and raise them as pets. Can anyone help me out please? Not wanting to pay $35 each!! which are what some a charging in some advertising. Michelle

Just letting you know ,Its almost impossible to sex silkies at 5-6 weeks and still hard at 10-12 weeks . At that age 5-6 weeks they still may need heat at night . As silkies they may not start start laying until they are 20-30 weeks plus . The reason most charge $35-$40 is the work and cost involved in getting a hen to point of lay . You may at this time of year get some unsexed chicks for $12-$20 approx . As it is the the beginning of breeding season there is not much that's older around. Good luck in your hunt it must be frustrating for you and your daughter

Thanks for your comments. Will keep it all in mind Since starting on this little adventure we have been told allllll sorts of things and given soooooo much information that doesn't match up. BUT we will get these gorgeous little chickens for our daughter, even if it does end up being 12 week ones. We just want ones that will know this is their home and will follow us around, rather than ones that are too old to realise if that makes sense. The laying is not a bother. They are more for pets than layers. I will keep the cost in mind thanks.
