As I have only recently delved into hatching my own chicks, I was reading about possible infections, diseases and general nasty business that can befall the littlies - do I have to vaccinate against Mareks and how do I go about it? And what other diseases can I/should I vaccinate against? Any advice is welcome!

I wouldn't worry too much about vaccinations. The Mareks vaccine come in 1000 doses and it has a very short shelf life when opened. So unless you hare hatching lots at a time it is just not economical.
It would be easier to make sure they have a good diet, clean living area and fresh water. That should keep them healthy and strong.

I have never injected my chicks if you keep clean pens nesting boxes and the like and you are verry fussy about what and who you purchase from you should be fine in WA we do not have a lot of stuff that will get us if you were in the east I would this is one reason why I get in fertile eggs for what I need take your chance on what hatches but I do not have any thing wrong with my stock except lice and sticky fleas I am now sorting out and this was the first time I have had anything like this for years no not let wild birds into your pens

The only thing I do other than what others have already said is just make sure you feed them chick starter for the first 6-8 weeks and chick grower after that It's medicated to prevent things like Cocci and isn't expensive so worth the effort
