8 weeks ago I bought a dozen Turkey poult's for Christmas, they were to be one month old when we got them we did however get them at a day old. I always use a lamp I use Turkey Starter I mix with onions, garlic, all green stuff and a tad of meat meal and shell grit. Still they have all gone off there legs they have twisted necks, the legs on some are bowed out,on others they just splaied it looks like a horror show to get my money back I should charge an entry fee. ;D ;D I have called the guy we got them from he was as useless as well you know what . The inbreeding on this scale should be shut down and that's all I can put this down to any thoughts please
thats not good trev i think u give me a call and we get sum base ball bats out....tis my thoughts...cant see how that crap can happen unless sum 1s messin round with test tubes. just put them all down and photoegraph everything. poor things
I don't know what the cause is but I would have thought that if it was genetic, it would have showed up earlier and if it was the parents' nutrition problem, that would have been sorted out since the chicks are eating and getting their own nutrition. I have read that sometimes chicks go so fast that it's body is not getting enough nutrition to catch up, resulting in a case of ricketts. May be try giving the Ricketts Diet. No harm trying.
Hi Chooky Yes Ricketts was a consideration but they have had shell grit, mulit vits, egg yolks and meat juices in the feed. They should have had plenty of Vitamin D and it is a shortage of D that brings it on, with all that I still wonder if there is in breading going on. The birds are only just one month old and not large by any means. I did however go and get an ultra violet light and I have had that on there legs but they can get to sunshine if they want to, all they seem to want to do is to stay under the heat lamps and eat. I run two lamps in there shed /pen and there not cold they are spread out over the two lamps side to side so I give up I will still continue on but I do not hold up a lot of hope for them I have bread my own Turkeys but not the double breasted ones A Turkey is a turkey Trev
Hi annieyokie I have never had this problem with the turkeys I have bread, or the meat birds. I have to admit this is the first time I have reared the double breasted Turkeys. I was told to take the protein easy for the first week and let the legs get a tad stronger, then you can go for it. The ration you purchase in the shops tell you its the same starter protein for turkeys and chicks, WRONG ! when I called the guy he was not interested at all them again I did not get them at the correct time I wanted the birds at one month old, when all the teething problems are done with, a mate that went into this with me picked them up from Perth, and when he got there they were only one day old he paid the same money for them we were going to pay for one month old birds, silly move. I have found one thing with the birds they eat all the green stuff I put in front of them, we have 11 left and a whole cabbage will go in no time along with a couple of onions garlic and the normal tucker they are missing something in there body. They have also consumed half a large bag of shell grit in about 5 weeks still cant put my finger on it but there is something wrong. I have in there drinking water amino acids and multi vitamins to try to give them a helping hand. It is an interesting one and I think its to late now to rectify this thanks for the input Trev
I was thinking, try cutting out the greens and leave them with just turkey feed. Let them fill up with just turkey feed hopefully all the nutrients they need are in the feed. My guess is that greens do not have all the nutrients needed to keep them growing properly.
HI Chooky They have always had chick starter the greens and garlic, onions ,cabbage, shell grit and the like are an extra to give them a boost along with the amino acids and the multi vits in there water, I cant get Turkey starter so I have to adjust there protein the feed guys tell me its the same they are wrong Turkeys need a higher protein than chicks do anyway another one passed away today and there are a few others that do not look great I think I will end up loosing the lot of them Trev
Turkey feed is pretty hard to find in WA, it seems. I have Japanese Quails. I was told they need to be fed turkey feed but can't find any. So I am feeding them chook feed with some meat meal every so often. So far so good.
Can you get game bird feed? It has high protein as well.

A big problem with nutrients is absorption .We can feed all the nutrients in the world and if its out of balance or not being absorbed properly there is a growth problem . This applies to people too. Allot of the patients we see are taking all manner of nutrients but not absorbing ..For any number of reasons ..Imbalance being just one of the reasons . Digestive , pancreatic upsets ,allergies ,genetics ,infections etc being a few others Unfortunately there is no easy fix for theTurkey poult's . You certainly have done your best. Trial and error . Have you tried them on sprouted grains .The absorb-able protein increases with sprouting (3 days is the most absorb-able) I sprout for my chicks but have to watch how much they get or they turn into super chicks . Should be great for turkey bubs Good luck with it Trev
HI elizabeth123 in a short answer NO and NO do not believe everything you read on Google My local ag store has had all the feeds in for years but you will be verry lucky to find a Turkey starter or grower in WA for some reason they seem to think they need the same protein alas it will not work you have to build up there level of protein with meat/fish meal and the like. A few years ago they used to sell it but Turkeys are not in fashion and they do not sell a load of it so tell the punters anything if it gets you off the hook.
Chooky, thanks for the info I have had the feelers out for some Game bird or the highest protein in any bird mix so far nothing I am on my way to Perth on the weekend and will have a look for a few bags while I am there Trev
