Hi guys, as most of you know im on this site 'representing' Mandurah Baptist College Sustainable Schools committee. After spending most of the year settling the girls in and integrating them into school activities it is time for my next project. By popular demand (and because its something i REALLY want to do!!) i have decided to see if i can get my girls so hatch some chickies this spring! I have only got about 12weeks left at school before i leave so i wanted to do something super awesome! Being a not-for-profit school committee we really heavily on donation or help from the community wherever it can be given. All donators/helpers are given all due appreciation, with newsletter mentions and by word of mouth (i talk to ALOT of people about things!) So what im getting at here is...is there ANYONE who is willing to do donate (and maybe deliver/post.....) a handful of fertile eggs? It only has to be half a dozen. You would be really helping out the school if you did. Thanks for all you help so far guys, You have been greatly appreciated by the school and I (and in results....the girls as well). Thanks again Ryan

Hi Ryan I would be more than happy to donate a half dozen fertile eggs to your cause I have pure bred light sussex but the rooster runs with the Isa's also if you'd like a mix of the two? There's nothing more fun than watching eggs hatch if you ask me I'm not real close to Mundurah though.... I might be able to make a day trip of it next week if that helps

Do you have any staff members who come through Byford way? We're just south of Byford (Cardup) and I'm more than happy for someone to drop by and pick them up? Otherwise, I'll still see if I can come down that way next week. It's only about an hour-ish, but I have 2 small children I'd have to drag along with me!

Hi ikbokchook, just had a phone call from the animal ethics lady from the government who gave me bad news. I am unable to "breed" the chickens ( i did explain i was only hatching them ) without written approval from the animal ethics committee. I am currently writing up a proposal which will unfortunately wont be checked until the meeting on the 13 sept. Sorry about that, i should have really checked first, i just didnt think it was an issue.
Sorry again,
Ryan

yeah sucks hey :/ we cant kill a fly anymore without following procedure. They dont actually have any paper work for letting chickens hatch their own eggs... however that does not make me exempt but makes it more 'risky'. Anyway, i always write well so all should be good, just need for it to get passed by there committee.

Hi Ryan,
I too am a teacher and I have had students hatch out eggs at work as a part of their studies with no problems.
I know that schools now have animal ethics people within the school (teachers who are looking our for animal rights etc), however I have never ever heard of a school writing to the Ethic people at government to hatc out eggs within a school.
School do this all of the time especially in primary school settings to show student the life cycle and developemnt of chickens etc.
If you do have one of these people on staff just reassure them that once they are hatched that either they will go to a farm for breeding purposes or if the school has a 'farm section' they will be raised there for eggs and breeding.
I would still go ahead with hatching the eggs as I think that you have been told a HUGE WOBBLY about getting permission.
Regards Terry

Just tell her that the hen sat on her own eggs and hatched a few chicks. You will be surprised how many people do not realise that you need a rooster for that.
That way, you didn't "do" it, the hen did.
