Hi all, I went out last night to find one of my anconas with a swollen face? Her eye is 1/2 closed a little wet but not oozeing and clear but the front of her eye/face is swollen? i separated her and it is the same this morning. We have never had any infections in our birds so I'm not sure what it is and what i do? Is it just grain in her eye or did she get it from a wild bird ? Also she is at pol healthy active and there is no sneezing or mucus? Its just the eye should i take her to the vet? Thanks so much for any help. Steve

Hi Steve Have had the same problem here and interestingly it is also with anconas! Try bathing it gently with a used (warm and damp) tea bag. Black tea is mildly astringent and should help whether a mild infection or something in the eye. Has worked OK here on POL age chooks. Have had it develop into more of an infection with a couple of young birds but cleared up OK.

Thanks for the tip, i rang the breeder and they said its called a wog and its a mild infection in the sinus and a quick dose of antibiotics should fix it quick. Apparently its common at change of seasons?

yes it is, and a swollen face is indicative of swollen sinuses full of guck. unluck people chooks make solid mucus/snot (sorry for hte grossness) that looks alot like cheese. it is common at the change of seasons, and a trip to the vet should help you out.

I had similar symptoms in my barnie cockeral a couple weeks ago. He was a bit quiet but overall ok. I left him be to see if he will recover by himself. He did without any help. If the cause is viral, antibiotics will not do any good.

I don't have a vet handy and the effectiveness of antibiotics is dependent on the type/strain of infection. In the young chook, I massaged her eye gently to allow the guck (your right a lot like white cheese unfortunately) to come out. Also, as I didn't have anything else on hand, gave her a small dose of people medicine - Demazine (for watery eyes and sinus!!) worked a treat and cleared it quicker than the others. !! Definitely off label use with no comeback.

take no chances treat the whole lot of your birds do not let it get to the rest of them this is why I used to use a quarantine pen until I stopped buying in stock anitbiotics? no one likes them but I would rather give it to the birds than have them pass away why loose them if you do not have to good luck Trev
