Is it necessary for Ducks to have access to a pond all the time? I have Welsh Harlequins, Silver Appleyards, Call Ducks, Black East Indies and a pen of mixed. They all seem to think their individual ponds are a requirement for the smart duck about town, stand around with foot tapping whilst the ponds get their daily clean.

They only need as much water as a chicken - something that fits their bill in. Its a misconception that they "have" to have ponds or baths.

This is true, but I have found that my ducks do enjoy a paddle, even if it is a small container that they can squeeze into. One of my duck pens has the plastic clam shell that kids use for a sandpit and I change the water once a week (for three ducks). My other ducks dont have anything apart from some small containers. Even if you dont put a pond in just spray them with the hose..they love that too.

Thanks for that, now that winter is just round the corner (we hope), perhaps I will put my foot down, regardless of the sad faces.

I have to try to get this on video - when I clean out the duck pond the girls will actually wait, in a line, until it's been cleaned and refilled. The oldest girl goes first then the next youngest followed by the youngest ducks. And if anyone decides to push in, they fairly get a hiding from the old girl! You can actually see them thinking "Hurry up!!! Why is this taking so long?" If the water pressure's rubbish, they even run on the spot until I'm done. They are nearly as impatient as my kids.
