Hi Guys I recently got some ducks to add to my menagerie and having never had them before I was wondering if some one can answer a few questions I got them when they were 8 weeks old and they are now about 5 or 6 months old Firstly when would I expect them to start laying. Do ducks lay all year like a chook or during the mating season only like a goose. and lastly as I have 2 breeds Calls (Bantams) and Buff Orpingtons ( large) will I need to seperate them to make sure that that don't interbreed or can I keep them together. currently they are in a large enclsure with a few chooks and all are getting on famously. ;D

My ducks don't lay all year round. They have a cycle but my younger girl is laying occassionally now (her 1st season) but I don't think the older one is.

Mine lay from late winter to late summer (Indies, Bant Sax and Mussie) and yup they will interbreed. I keep a couple of Mussie gals in with my Indies to use as broodies and one this year hatched out a Mussie x Indie duckling

If you cross other breeds of ducks with muscoveys thay will all be mules and you can not breed with them. Yes my saxonys ducks lay late winter to late summer.DUCKS lay 6 months of the year.then molt so thay dont lay at this time best to have some chooks to fill in this time for your eggs.
