I am after as many opinions as possible... Have posted the same on BYP forum, but will put it out here too as there is a different audience.... Hope you dont mind... But are we boys or girls?? RIR boy ? (8 wks) RIR Girls ? (9 wks) Australorp Girls ? (8 wks) Australorp Boy ? (8 wks) And then this guy, who is/was supposed to be a RIR, but is quite obviously not. Some 'stray' egg/chick that found its way into the breeders batch of RIR's... Obviously a boy, but a boy what?? As an explanation, I was initially after 4 POL Pullets in either Australorp or RIR. Was unable to get any, no matter how far and wide I searched, so I settled for 8 Day/week old chicks, 4 of each breed, hoping that I will get at least 4 girls in there. Quality of breed/type/standard etc is not of any importance, as I will not be keeping any boys, they will be either re-homed or eaten. I only want girls for eggs. Any breeding, will be crossbreeds, as I am NOT going to give up my Lil' Roosty.... he is such a lovable sooky lala boy, and I want that trait in ANY chook I have. For me, I only want good farm chooks... X breed is good for that.

Hi Rainbow, I agree with your assumptions on your sexing, the last photo of the cockerel I would say he is a new hampshire with incorrect leg colour as they should have yellow legs and, and has hen colouring on the neck, boys should not have the black there.

I agree with you. From my experience with chicks i've learnt that if they grow tail feathers before getting red in their comb, then they are pullets, and if the get red in their combs before tails, then they're roosters. I just haven't been able to try that out on silkies hehe.

I agree with your summations. We sex chicks at a few days old based on their wing shape. Cockerals have a rounded wing shape and pullets have a pointed wing shape. Think this is the right way round. My OH does it this way and has about a 95% success rate from a few days old. If I have put it the wrong way around I apologise. Will correct later if need be.
