What an emotional day I have had today. I have a nice broody who is raising 5x7 week old silver Barnevelder chicks in the orchard and today I was at the kitchen sink washing my hands glancing over to the orchard and I saw my broody jump in the air land on the ground and what looked like a convulsion. I raced out side and she was dead and her babies where pecking her and squaking. They have sat in their house all afternoon. Tonight is going to be a lonely night for them. This is the part of being a chicken owner I dont like Linda

That is sad Linda and I can sympathise. I had my broody die last week. It was a hawk. She died protecting her babies. So sad. One of the downsides of owning animals.

Was it a snake bite. Sounds a bit like it. I had one die when the chicks were only a few days old. Had to put them in a home-made incubator to keep them warm for a week before they could go out on their own. All seven survived. I have one white frizzle now who has chicks about five weeks old and she has started laying eggs and has gone broody again. I'll have to go out tonight with a torch to see whether she is still mothering the chicks at night or pushing them away. If she isn't looking after them I'll have to put her in a separate pen so they can use the nest. It's all part of the fun. Mike
