Hi eveveryone My son has been given 2 plymouth rock chicks male & female(she has cocci) they are 7 weeks old and they dont have a lot of feathers on the and still mostly down. They are a good size. I have been told the mature slowly. Can any give some info about this later maturing, anything I might need to know about the breed ie: temperment... and if they need to have a warm light on because of the lack of feathers. Cheers linda

Hi Linda
I have lots of Plymouths and yes they do seem to mature slowly. Mine even loose their down when they are only half covered in feathers. They look freaky. As I have lots they snuggle in together with their hatching buddies and do just fine. I would worry if there were only 1 or 2 however. Not all of my plymouths grow their feathers like this however. A small percentage are "normal".
I find the Plymouths are drama queens when picked up or picked on but other than that they are a great chook (and they add a bit of colour to the pen). They are always commented on by visitors. I have never had a nasty hen or rooster but look out when they are broody or have hatched babies!!
