I have a friend who will be looking after my chooks whilst we are away, I mentioned that he can have the eggs during this period, however his reaction was to ask if they had been on antibiotics for salmonella? I have not treated my chooks for anything, should I? They are all healthy and we eat the eggs, obviously I worm them and treat them for lice not that they have ever had any?? I'm confused should I be treating them for such things??

There was an outbreak recently in USA where heaps of people were infected. So maybe that caused his concern. According to the USA branch of the FDA, improperly handled and cooked eggs are the main problem eg. hollandaise sauce uses raw egg. But infected chickens have the bacterium in their gut which they can transfer to their eggs. They're investigating DNA tracking of their egg-laying hens which could help identify the infected hens before an outbreak occurs. So unless your friend doesn't cook his eggs properly he's got no worries.

HI Belle I wonder how old the eggs were when they tried to do what ever to them, and I have never heard of an outbreak in Australia have you. It was always deemed to be the safest thing to use to breed with no diseases in the eggs at all Trev

Don't know how old the eggs were Quambie but the report is on the internet somewhere! I think the last major drama with poultry in Australia was eons ago with Newcastle disease when I was a kid but I do have a rubbish memory! I have a friend in the US and she said she will not eat any eggs other than what she produces on her place because the factory farmed eggs you can buy in the supermarket are tasteless and don't hold their shape. Plus she was saying the factory farming in the US is on an absolutely huge scale now and their standards haven't caught up yet. I thought I had problems with my cocci outbreak!

eggs that do not hold shape are old and that is the problem with the population of the US you would think that the eggs would sell fast Trev
