Well so far only four have hatched. Two pekins and two araucana's. There's another pekin just starting. I was sure i saw a silky with a chip in it but can't find it (i think the chicks have rolled it). Anyway here's some poor quality pics The first egg hatching. Just hatched Resting, waiting for some friends to hatch. Do you think this colour is lavender? I'll keep everyone updated

If they are dry can you put them in the brooder or do you have to wait 24 hours

That's what i've been wondering because it's getting pretty crowded in there, and there's only 7 hatched so far. They keep knocking all the other eggs that are trying to hatch. hmm

Hi Squeak, congrats on your new babies, they look fantastic, I always leave all of the chickies in the incubator until the end of the due date, the extra humidity that is happening with the chicks is good, once you start opening the incubator to take out a few the humidity drops and the remaining chicks are unable to hatch sometimes. I've noticed with my orps they usually hang on to the lastest on the due date. What I try and do is put the eggs in the incubator initially first thing in the morning, and then take the chickies out last thing on the due date, sometimes you might have an odd 1 or 2 hatch the day after, but usually these are the weaker ones. the chicks are OK to stay in the incubator for the 24 hrs.

Thanks for that H7
My main worry at the moment is that they've knocked some eggs to the outer edge of the incubator and i'm worried they're not getting heated enough. They're getting quite boisterous in there!
There's also one egg that has started to pip, there a small hole, but they've knocked it so many times that it hasnt done any more for well over 2 hours now.
Yep i'm a paranoid mummy hahaha

Lol squeak, I think I would be paranoid too. But the voice of experience (horses7) tells us to wait. I watched a video on the net of a chick hatching and it was knocking the other eggs around too. Any update on hatching? Another I read yesterday was that sometimes bantam eggs hatch as early as 18 days. Now that has thrown me into a tail spin.

Well it's day 22 today, and they're still going! Geez! The last lot to hatch are my orpingtons, there's two more to go that are alive still (i checked some others and they were dead). So my hatch count at the moment is 19, with two more possibilities. I'm not holding my breathe on them though, i'm still happy with what i have Once they're all out of the incubator i'll know exactly what i've got, i know there's about 7 or so araucana's, 3 or 4 silkies and about 4 or 5 pekins. Oh and my only buff orpington egg hatched! I couldn't believe it! I've put most of the chicks in the brooder and left the ones that were born late yesterday and today in the incubator to finish off. Oh and look what hatched out in the paddock this morning.. A nice big filly

I put 42 in there, so not a hugely great success rate. But it was my first attempt (other than my experimental one) so not too bad. I've got 20 chicks hatched, 1 egg is still in there, not holding my breathe but it was cheeping still, and one chick isn't doing very well, it won't walk or anything, and barely opens its eyes.
These orpingtons sure are slow at hatching!! haha. I'm really surprised by the ones that hatched late yesterday and early this morning that they are actually looking alright, I've left the newbies in the incubator but taken the older ones out.
Now i can't wait until i set the next lot of eggs! haha

nearly 50% hatch rate is pretty good for your first attempt, could have been a lot worse, how are they all going?

Well I've got 19 chickie dee's They are growing very nicely, going through heaps of feed, little piggies. Most have quite alot of wing feathers and some are getting their tail feathers. The last orpington egg never hatched, it was silent by the end of the day so i threw it out. I didn't even bother cracking it open to see what was wrong. Have ordered my next lot of eggs. 1 doz silkies from over east (saw her silkies and fell in love with them), then 1 doz silky and 1 doz pekins from a guy in perth, and just confirmed yesterday some indian game eggs from over east with some araucana's if he cant make up a doz of those. They will be sent on the 15th, so hopefully they'll all get here by wednesday the 17th and then thursday i'll set them

Oh and my turbo fan gets installed on the 13th-14th so i should have an even better success rate (as long as everything goes alright with them being sent, because they'll all be from posted eggs). I'll be happy with 50% though
