Hi, Does anyone know where I can get some cheap feeders & waters?? The last lot that I had just gave up the ghost and I've shopped around but they seem really expensive. I've found the large (8kg?) feeders can range from $54.00 at the local rural shop to $36 on fmb.com.au (not including postage). I have an ABN and can always buy as a wholesaler as I need a few of each. Thanks ;D

If anyone is still interested in this thread, I have had trouble with the waterer with the coke bottle screwed in. OK for chicks by themselves but a mothering hen soon knocks them over. You can of course fix them in place against a post or something but then you have to unfix them for refills. I think a better idea is a wide jar stuck into a piece of PVC pipe with holes in it and then turned upside down into a dish. I buy old aluminium or enamel baking pans at garage sales or op shops. The water rises in the dish to the level of the holes, so you can make it shallow for chicks or deeper for bigger birds. For large flocks I buy one of those big (20 litre?) bottles of spring water or whatever it is. Cost about $14 and I got mine from a service station). Turn that upside down into the pvc pipe with the holes cut in it. This will provide a flow of water for a week or more. Of course, once the spring water runs out I fill it up from the tap. Also, I use an occy strap to hold the bottle against the side of the chook shed and stop it toppling over.

This is something I have heard several time about the plastic water fonts. I have them and fortunately I have had no problems what so ever.

My plastice ones seem to last about 2 years before the sun finally kills them. I still use them though but having read Mike's watering idea I think I might have a go at trying that.... Do you get any algae build up in the PVC pipe and how to you clean it out

I get algae in the bottle and the pvc pipe. I have a long brush with a flexible wire handle I use to clean them and I have two bottles, one clean one ready to go when I take the other out to clean it. I also put bleach in and leave the bottle to soak. If the chooks don't use up the water before the algae starts forming I just change the bottle over before it is empty. Still lasts for up to a week or more and is better than constantly changing smaller ones. Great if I have to go away to Perth for up to a week. I always check the dish itself daily as they can scrape junk into it or simply dust can settle on the water. Then I just flick it out and let fresh run in.

Now I know why mine are ok, they are not in the sun. I have old chemical square containers cut in half scattered all over the pens. Great for the ducks too as they go through so much water.

my water fonts are good too or bubbles as i call them but are also kept out of the sun i have had them for about 4 years believe it or not i just put them under the awning of the coop or in the house to keep the sun off ..1 even had a cheap shade sale ( my brother made it for me he's an upholterer sorry can't spell ) but i find them the best as i have a massive passion fruit climbing all over the pen and the leaves and rubbish drop through and always muck my water but i love passion fruit and don't want to remove it ..It is loaded with fruit this year can't wait

I saw a stainless steel automatic waterer (float type) in the local grain supply last week for $45.oo. I've talked to the trouble and strife and it is on next weeks shopping list. Just have to plum it up, wich means bl**dy digging trenches, not my idea of fun. At least when i go away for a few days the chookens will still have a fresh supply of water. I reckon a quick wipe out every week or so should see it keep reasonably clean. My plastic waterer is inside the coop out of the sun, so i should get a few years out of it.

Plink You could always connect it up to one of those 200lt blue plastic drums. Bunnings do a 15m/m poly tank connector for about $9 Might save you digging a trench.
