I am thinking ahead to when my first lot of babies arrive. Which is better an infra red heat lamp of just a normal globe in the brooder. What do you use and why?

Good question. I would like to know as well for when we build our brooder in the next couple of weeks

I use a regular globe, for the size brooders I have, as it is now cool at night I have gone to a 75W, during the summer I use either 40W or 60W depending on the age of the chickens. My brooders are old kitchen cupboards on their backs, and the doors I use as covers to keep the warmth in. But watch your chickies if they are too cold they will all huddle under the light and if they are too hot they will still huddle but as far away from the light as they can and they will squeak quite loud. what you want to see is them running all over the box quite happily. Hope that was of some help

I've had a heat lamp for a while and normally use it, but it's good to see i can use a normal light incase anything happens to it. I'm making my brooder tomorrow or this weekend sometime, making it out of an old computer desk, i'm going to have them in that for a week or two, and then i have an outside one that they can go in during the day and maybe night (havent decided yet), also going to make a cold brooder/mother hen box for them when they get a bit bigger (i just figured tonight that my next lot of chicks will hatch and then need the heat lamp, while my first lot will still need something warm... 6 more days!!
