Hi Chris
Are these barred Plymouth Roacks and have you had any successful hatchings from these breeding chooks? Just had our first lot of eggs hatch (from a local supplier) with six with genetic related problems and don't want to repeat that experience:(

Sorry Standychook, I have not noticed your question until now. I am with Annieyokie and have not heard or experienced any genetic related problems. I would also be interestedin when genetic problems you experienced.

Sorry I havn't been on the forum for a while and missed the questions on this thread. The chicks we hatched had leg deformities were not plymouth Rocks, they were australorpe/light sussex cross breeds that I got locally, I was asking about the PR parents is because it is a breed I am interested in.
The chicks that were affected hatched with slipped tendons (perosis), some only one leg, a couple were both legs, advice I sought at the time confirmed it was caused by mineral deficiencies in the mother. I tried repositioning the tendon and splinting, supported them in slings etc as I had read that some people have had success with doing this, but they were really bad and after a few days were clearly in pain so were pts rather than made to suffer through any more attempts to fix the problem.
So although it was caused by the parents, its probably not correct in saying its a 'genetic' problem as it could be corrected in future chicks if the mother was given a suitable diet...in this case parents wern't my birds, but I really don't want to repeat that experience!
