I picked up a program today for the Kelmscott show in October. I'd really like to show some of my Speckled Sussex, but.... since I have never shown chooks before, can someone please educate me on the pre-prep processes and (as the show if one day after my bithday - I *might* have a wee hangover!) how much time do you actually spend at the venue? I'd really love to show some of my chookies, but I have NO idea! Thanks!

how long you spend at the venue depends on how far away you live.................if you live near enough you can put your birds in their cages by penning time, (this should be indicated on the schedule) and go home and come back later. generally birds need to be there from about 8.30 am (or a bit earlier) through to 4 or 5pm.
preparation of the birds involves washing them and thier feet, there is a good article on this on the main page of byp.

Hi Do you have any details about the Kelmscott show? Is it only a show or do people sell stock there as well? Thanks tpirlo@iprimus.com.au

I don't *think* you can buy stock, there's a form for auctioning veggies but nothing for the poultry, so I would assume not?? I have had to clip my chooks wings a while back, and they haven't fully regrown yet - would this disqualify them from a show? Going to have a looky at byp page too! Cheers!

Good luck!!! From the ones I saw when we visited, I'm sure you'll do well. Am considering showing at the local show next year so I'll be watching with interest. Might need the 12 months to get in the chook washing practice.

Hi Ikobokchook I am also thinking of showing at Kelmscott. My speckled sussex decided to sit on eggs yesterday So I wont enter her, but i might put one of my other breeds in. To kill some time during judging we could catch up for coffee and cake if you are interested this could include any other members. I have 2 birds of mine entered at the Royal. My breeder is sorting it out for me as he is going with his lot and my 2 are included. I miss out on the prep work So Kemlscott will be testing my show prep skills! Let me know if you find any good sites to help to know what to do. Cheers Linda

Naww! Thanks Belle! Sorry Linda, I'm gonna have to give this one a miss, like you - ALL my speckies have gone broody! (little monkeys!) As Jaquie posted earlier, the BYP has a great source of info for prepping ( not that I've done it mind you!) I'm actually a bit upset that I'm not able to enter - would be great to meet a few of you guys and see how my chooks would go!

Lol! Those speckies sure are ambitious little things! I had one sit on 26 eggs! (only hatched 8 - thank goodness!) and another is sitting on 15 (all hers too!) Hopefully she won't hatch ALL of them - I'm over run with chooks at the moment!
