Hello all, I thought I would keep this quiet as this was my first time ever trying to hatch chicks in my new incubator. It was supposed to be a trial run with no attachment to the end result as some of you may know my run is still not finished. However now my teenagers are faced with chicks and not boring eggs I am forced to keep them. From an initial setting of 24 eggs, 5 unfertile, 5 bad I have 14 lovely little chicks, at the moment; all chicks hatched on Saturday and came through Sunday unscathed. However when I got home from work tonight one chick was on its side going round in circles and can now not stand up on its own. Any ideas Should I just put the little thing out of it’s misery as it sounds very distressed Foolishly I covered the floor of the brooder with shavings and have since found out this is wrong due to the chicks eating the shavings getting blocked up and dying, is this what I have done? PLEASE HELP The New Arrivals Number One Chick (not the sick one)

the problem with the chick is highly unlikely to have anything to do with the fact that you have used shavings....................i use shavings all the time and it does NOT killl the chicks.
sometimes when chicks hatch they get an infection of their navel, or other internal infections. it could present as you are describing, and the kindest thing is most probably putting it out of its misery.
the first few days after hatching are crucial times, up to a week after they hatch they can get "mysterious" illnesses, so sorry that it has happened to you. maybe it even banged its head, but even if it had pigged out on shavings it would not be expressing it by going around and around on its side.

So sorry to hear about your little chick new2chooks. When you hatch out chicks sometimes you just get some that don't survive for whatever reason and it really is the down side of breeding, but the upside is all the little cuties that survive and you get to see grow up and change into adult chooks and start laying or crowing...
