Ok so I'm really impatient, probably the most impatient person haha.
Well I decided to put a bigger brighter bulb in my old touch lamp, to see if i could candle my eggs better. And it worked! (Not as good as what i'm hoping my candling thing will be when i get it tho..)
I only candled a few of my eggs, because after all, it is only day 5 so there's not much to see. BUT I saw a few shadows in my bigger eggs and my araucana eggs (they were a bit harder to candle because they are green) not sure if they are good yet or not, but i'm thinking if there's a shadow, there's a possibility its a goodone.
I also saw a couple clear ones BUT I saw some definite spidering on some silky and some pekin eggs!! I only saw a shadow on my one buff orpington egg so i hope that ends up a chick!
So now i'm so much more excited because I know there's atleast a few definite babies on the way!

Hey squeak, I know what you mean. I don't have an incubator, yet. I sent some eggs to my sister and I can't wait. Like the expectant parent. At least its only 3 weeks

Thanks for the site horses7 Fluffychook, you should get one, they're lots of fun. haha. And i'm glad they only take 21 days to hatch! Imagine 9 months?! Or 11 like horses! We've got a horse and a pony due to foal soon, the horse is due in 3 weeks ! It's a pity you can't shine a torch into their belly to see the foal moving.... (got a feeling she's going to go over tho..hmmf) I did re-candle tonight just to show my otherhalf what i was so excited about, and it appears that my buff egg has some spidering in it! Argh cant wait!

Well I candled last night, and am quite happy with the results.
I made myself a little chart of what type of egg is where in the incubator, and then wrote if it was good or not and what i saw.
I have 3 definite pekins (pekin was written on the eggs), then 3 maybe pekins/maybe silkies (silkies and pekin eggs look the same and they were unmarked)...
Then I have 10 definite araucana's and 2 maybe's (they were just too dark to see properly, but might be bad eggs so i'll wait until i get my candling thing for those).. (really happy with those, i bought 12 and might get a full 12 out of them!)
Then i have 4 definites silky eggs (another was dead, and another was clear)
Then this is the real bummer, out of 13 orpington eggs, only 5 are any good! Luckily my buff egg is good!
So not too bad at this stage, I really hope no more of the silkies die and the rest survive, oh and i get some girls!!

Sounding good squeak, so there will be lots of photos in the new arrivals, Because orpingtons have so much fluff, to increase the chances of fertililty, their fluff needs to be trimmed, and also I only have 5 hens, but I have 2 roosters in the pen. they don't seem to be very aggresive and they all get on quite well (so far) but my hatched rate is usually 80-85%,

Congrats Squeak. Hope they all make it to the end. I candled my 24 eggs at day 9 on Friday. I bought a nice little torch from Bunniing with am adjustable beam & it seems to work well. I had movement in 19 eggs, 3 unsure, 1 dead & 1 empty. The babies are heinz mothers that were either blue or white in colour & a blue Australorp or a certain Wyandotte rooster (if he got it together with the girls ). 9-10 days to go.

Thanks for that tip H7, I bought them from a guy in maddington (but sadly he'd passed away so there's no way we could've known how good they were anyway) pity they were the most expensive hehe. But ohwell, i'm happy my buff is seeming to be alive and there's 4 blue's still good. It's also good to know about trimming, I don't have a rooster yet but will be getting one if there's none in this lot. Fizzle, so our babies are due around the same time We're going away for a night maybe this weekend so i'm a little bit nervous about leaving them incase the power goes out or we have a cold snap. Still exciting though

It hatched! It's a Pekin, seems to be a white one maybe? Looks all yellow anyway. One of my araucana's started at the same time, but hasn't progressed at all, only has a crack in the shell. So I bet that ones going to be a pain! The pekin hatched within about 45 minutes of me seeing the crack. This is sooo much better than setting eggs under a chook. You actually get to see them hatching! I'll update on their progress

Are you staying up all night with them? I don't think I could sleep very well with babies arriving. Looking forward to some pictures

Haha, well I got up every couple of hours pretty much. Two araucana's hatched over night, there's a few more pekin eggs looking like they're going to hatch soon, I might have to hurry up and post in new arrivals with some pics.
