I've come to the conclusion that my chooks have lice. Everytime i come back from the chook pen, I have things crawling on me and when i eventually find them, they look like big lice. So now I have the great job ahead of me, of powdering all my chooks! Luckily I have the dust already, it's just the hassel of catching them all and doing it. Has anyone got a suggestion on how to do it easily?? I usually just hang them by their feet upside down and powder under their wings and near their bum. But if there's any other way i'd be happy for suggestions I think i'll start with the bantams, their alot easier!

Hi squeak I don't think there is an easy to get around the lice problem but some thing that might help is if your chooks have a favorite place that they dust bath you can put some of the poultry dust there which helps them control the lice them self. if you have a fireplace or wood stove at your place you can use the fine ash out of it for the same purpose. just make sure that it is free of any thing that you might light the fire with. ( Diesel ) It works a treat and is at the right price (free) Cheers Andrew

I do mine the same as you... hang em upside down and get it all under the feathers easier, but I wait til it is dark and they have gone to bed. Easier to catch that way, and they put up a little less resistance when you try to invert and dust them.
Good Luck.... I just did all mine last weekend, follow up is tomorrow !!

I just read on BYP forum that you can just put any type of mectin based cattle drench on the back of their necks... i'm going to try it (we live on a beef cattle farm so drench is easy to come by) just need to get the dosage right. Apparently it works for mites, lice, stickfast fleas and worms

I think you will find the "drench" will need to put in the drinking water, wheras a "pour on" can go on the skin. And yes, it will work on all parasites.
If you keep searching on BYP the dosage rates are on there somewhere.
I wish I could get some easily, but the least I can buy is a litre and that is over $200 and seems a tad excessive to treat half a dozen chooks!!
