I have often visited this website and sneaked a look at your abundence of chook info and thought that I really ought to become a fully fledged member.
A brief history of myself:
A pom who has grown up mostly in the countryside and we have always lived off back garden supplies and woodland produce. However I have only started keeping my own chooks since I moved here 3 years ago.
I rented a property in Baldivis that came with a ready made chook run 10m x10m and I decided to make full use of it. We have just moved into a bigger property in the same area which has some make shift chook pens which I am busily trying to get tidied up and organised better.
We have an abundence of animals
2 horses (chester and Rose) 1 dog (Rio) 2 cats (Mia and Angel) A trio of Sussex (Rocky II, salt and pepper) A pair of Muscovies (raised from chicks) Bill and Gandalfa (was Gandalf then found out he was a she!) 1 rather large Bantam Buff Cochin (Big Bird) 1 small black chook that I have no idea what it is (Blackie) 1 Peacock (eddie)
Needless to say we go through a lot of feed and eat a lot of eggs!
Next will be buying an incubator and trying some hatching
My wife would say I am a little obsessed with it all - but she seems to come home with little orphans more often then me!
I am a bit of a regular down at the Mundijong Poultry auctions - still finding it very hard to stop bringing stuff home!
Welcome Curtis, what a great place you must have. And since you have been reading the posts you understand our love of pictures. So please post some if you can. I too sometimes go to the auctions, never bought any poultry but have been tempted.
Silkies, 2 dogs, 2 monkeys (oops, I mean grandchildren)
Pictures will be forth coming - I work abroad (Rio at the moment) so may be a few weeks...!
Yes we have a pretty big property now, 7 acres, although most of that is taken up by the horses. I keep expanding my little areas every time I get home - work shop, veggie plot and pens - hopefully will be able to get a few acres of my own evetually to put to chook use! Saves on mowing if nothing else
Hi Curtis, welcome to the site looks like we have a little in common, both recent additions from the motherland and settled in Baldivis, although I don't have as many animals (yet) just two dogs, two rats and a partly finished chook shed. Would like to know when the next Mundijong Auction is set to take place, anyone . Anyway welcome
Auction is on the 1st and 3rd wednesday of each month.
If you want to look around the stalls then go earlyish 10-12 anytime after that they are packing things away.
If you want to sell get in around around 9 to drop off your chooks and what not, as most birds fetch a better price at the beginning of the poultry auction.
They start the auctions around 11 selling the sundries/misc (junk) though the odd item does pop up and can be bidded for cheap - I always look but mostly come away empty handed.
Next they do the stock (goats and pigs) which you need a license for - so I haven't dabbled in that department yet.
Then finally on to the Poultry - this starts around 1pm and can last until 3pm depending on the turn out.
As the link provided suggests it is definitely buyer beware - so if you are a bit new then ask someone, most people there are very friendly and honest.
You get quite a good mix of birds some very good, some very bad. Always worth a look though.
The other bonus is the market would tie in very nicely with the Baldivis Poultry plucking/dressing service I saw advertised on here which has drop off hours at 9am and pick up after 2pm on wednesdays. So you could choose a wednesday the market is on get your chooks dressed while you shop for more stocks!
Can anyone recommend any other auctions to go to and when they are on?
Hello! I'm nearly always wandering about at the Mundi wednesday auctions too! Rarely buy or sell there but LOVE to have a look around! They also sometimes have horse auctions on a Saturday, but not usually many birds there, if any. Sounds like you have a great collection of animals! Welcome! and maybe I'll see you in Mundijong some time!
