Painter, can you add some pics of your chicken tractor, we all love looking at different designs and getting new ideas. Cheers

Thats a good tip about the aviary wire farmchooks My chook runs are quite large so theyre just chicken wire but all my birds get locked in the houses at night so I concentrate on making the houses fox proof.

I took some photos today, and will add them as soon as I get a chance to take them of the camera.
Steph we did use the nice sturdy welded aviary wire, thank goodness someone else told me that foxes chew through chicken wire, the day before we went and bought supplies.
The tractor ended up costing three times as much as originally planned, but my chookies are safe, and that is all that matters.

Painter, I have finally found someone else who likes to use zip ties (cable ties). I have used hundreds over time for various jobs. Some people find them annoying, namely OH.

I use cable ties as leg bands for identifying different chickens, they are a cheap alternative than the regular leg bands, as there are quite a few different colours and even when you run out of colours just thread some different coloured plastic piping on and off you go again. the only thing you do have to watch is that they dont get to tight.

This is a photo of my tractor (I posted it in another thread, but thought I would post here as well). You can see my free water bucket as well - I got it from a bakery and hubby drilled some big holes with a hole saw. Took the girls a couple of days to get used to it, but it keeps the water clean:) I need to get another one for their feed. This is the unused dog kennel that we started with

Plastic zip ties are a great idea for attaching wire netting to your frames, But word of caution i have found they have a short life and break down with UV light. So do check them every couple of months if foxes are around.Better safe than sorry. I have also had foxes chew through my chicken mesh i now use weld mesh its much stronger.

My, don't i have it easy, with out having to worry about foxes, I agree with rap about the cable ties having a short life, found out with my aviary. When i built my chook pen i origionally used cyclone wire, very strong but the doves and other small birds could get through the holes in the wire. I don't know if it's my computer, but i couldn't see the pictures painter.

well what a great idea H7. Do you have a photo of the end result. My old tractor died a year of so ago it was a circular one made for PVC and was very unwieldy and difficult to secure agains foxes and dogs. But yours looks great. I might get my Oh to look at your plans to see if he can put one together for me. My OH is currently drawing up plans for a 6 pen run with chicken wire seperating each run and with a hut in the middle split into 6 seperate houses to lock the cooks into at night. I will update you on any photos as if develops if you are interested

Yes, my tractor is still in use and is going well, has been damaged a couple of times with strong winds, but you just join the pipe together again and is as good as new.
