HI All well its that time again. After the lamping I did a while ago I feel I should have a few chicks in the bator, this will be 100 eggs I have tried and to date I have nothing to show for it . I have just purchased a new Bator and lamping torch along with a new temp and hydrometer meter. Now all I need a cockerel or two that will do there job and I am set. I am still not to happy with the temperature that the bator set its self all the way through the time it was high then it was low, take today I had a look this Am first thing and it was on 36.4c humidity was at 56 percent with only two days to go except for the late ones, I thought that was low. I now have 80 percent humidity and a temp of 37.2 getting there this is not a fan forced bator. In the next couple of days I will let you know how I get on, then I am going to try once again in the new one before I get shot of the cockerels, or have you any other tips for me by the way there Light Sussex chickens Trev

Hi Trev, I've never had any trouble with my light sussex. I'm sure that you will hatch some. My incubator didn't cost too much but has a fan. Of all that I read, that seemed to be the most important to keep the temp constant. If the temp is a bit low they might hatch a day late.

What sort of bator is your new one/......... I put a computer fan in one of mine all my others have fans.
How far did the last eggs get ? If the eggs took its not the rooster !..It could be young immature hens.......sometimes with young hens eggs the eggs are just not strong enough to make the distance....... or more likely the old incubator...highs and lows .. I like to leave my hatching untill the hens have been laying at least 3-4 months and thats early ... many good breeders use hens in there second season.

HI annieyokie The old one has the makers name faded its that old The last lots of eggs only one had any kind of red in it at all, the others were not there at all all just yokey the new bator is a hex-angel new style bator holds 60 eggs with a fan in a plastic form with clear lid they did a great promotion on them you get the bator, an extra thermometer and they say the strongest torch for lamping, all for $ 180.00 plus postage of $ 15.00 all in all its a good deal. Then I just ordered a gauge to get the humidity correct that was $ 40.00 delivered all should be with me this week with luck . As for the hens they have been on the lay now for three or four months the eggs are a lot larger now the roosters came with them about the same age they seem to be working the girls ok from what I have seen in the runs. It could well be that there too young for the job we will soon see. I have one that's broody and I gave her 6 eggs to sit on, to see if its the bator or me or what ever hope she hatches the lot .I have had them on a 17 % ration along with there grain mix at night to give them a lift if this lot do not hatch I will have to leave it for another time I think unless that broody girl works wonders Trev

Wth the incubator you have now (I also have a still air one) you have to be careful to take the temp from the top (above the eggs) and it should read 38.5C I find with mine I get a better result if I set it at 37.5-38C, sometimes they just hatch a little late - but better than the problems you can get if it's too hot! Also, a hygrometer doesn't work in a still air bator - can't remember the exact reason why - but I don't even bother in mine! With only two days to go, you should be seeing some wobbling soon - good luck!
