Hi All Ihave been looking at your site for a few days now and decided time I joined. We live in Norseman and I have decided I would like a few chickens in our backyard to eat our kitchen scraps and hopefully get some eggs. I am not sure what sort of chickens to get yet although the coop and run is built so I am off to do some more reading

Thanks everyone for your warm welcome. I am thinking my ideal chook for starters might be an Isa Brown or Hi lines no doubt I will become addicted as I love all animals. We are in Perth in about 3 weeks time and will be wanting to take some chickens home any ideas on where to start looking?

Hi Leah, I am a relative newbie as well. We started out with 4 Isa Browns, bought from a free-range egg farm. Very tough and docile, we love them. One died in the January heatwave and I waited till the cooler weather started before I bought more. I went to an awful place (a battery egg farm, which I didn't realise until I got there) and got 2 point-of-lay Hy-lines. These two are very flighty, nervous and difficult (maybe due to their start in life?). They have taken quite a while to get used to things and are still very timid around the older girls (who are not really that bossy). Personality-wise I prefer the Isa Browns over the Hy-Line Browns any day.

I have two children who are very excited about the chickens so i would like to get chickens that have thwe right personality the kids but also produce enough eggs for us to enjoy. So may of the chikens in your photos look so cute. I suppose I am also restricted to what is available in Perth when we head down that way shorlty.

Well i am very excited I pick my chickens up May 22. I phoned the lady from Cluckyhen out of the Quokka and she is going to tag 3 for me. She was extremely helpful and suggested some breeds. So...we are getting an Isa Brown, a Silkie and a Silver or Gold laced Wyandotte. I have showed my kids (6 and 3) the pictures on the net and they too are excited. I hope the 6 hours drive home is not too stressful for the little darlings.

Welcome to WAP, Leah! I am sure you will be very happy with anything you get off Clucky Hen and I am sure the will survive the drive home well....I have driven with a backseat full of chooks from as far away as Albany and they seemed to cope OK
