Hi Folks, We have finally built a chicken coop and so I am now ready to source some chickens to fill the coop. We used to keep Rhode Island Reds and Barnvelders. Barnvelders seem to be quite difficult to source and the DD didn't like the RI-Rs so this time I am looking for Buff Orpingtons and Wyandottes.
Am only wanting 6 hens at the moment and one rooster. Would like to buy them all at the same time so they all go into the new pen together with hopefully no problems. I am hoping that if they all go into a new pen at the same time then there wont be any "territory" problems to sort out.
We live in the Great Southern.
Have been reading this site for a year or more now and finally I will get to do something other than read about chickens when I finally find my own and bring them home.
Cheers Kitty ;D

Well done! It's so exciting getting your first chooks! The Quokka and www.chooknet.com.au can both be handy for finding birds, there are also a few people on here who breed, but I don't really know who's got the breeds your after... hopefully someone else will have a better idea. Cheers Ashley ps Glad your finally posting... I also lurked for a long time before I finally got my girls.

Thankyou Ashley and Rap, I am sure I will eventually find what I will find what I am looking for. I emailed a breeder in Oakford a few days ago how ever have not heard from her as yet. Have seen other breeders listed, am not in a hurry so happy to take my time and look around for something closer or in the general direction I generally travel in. Still have a few tiny things to finish setting up so in the meantime I continue to live through others endevours.

Hi Wendy and Lakelands, Thankyou for the welcome. I have decided it is maybe not a good time to look for chickens at the moment. All my queries seem to be getting met with - its not breeding season... It is also proving difficult to find what I am after with in reasonable distance to where we live at this time. In the meantime I shall continue to plan.

Hi Kitty, you say you are in the great southern, sometimes the Albany Poultry Club hold poultry auctions, you could try at their next one. Im not sure when it is though. I think theres a thread on here posted by mike murphy about the dates. Cheers, Wendy

Well I haven't been on much lately although have popped in from time to time to see whats' been up.
Have at last bought my 7 little chicks home. They survived the long drive (gosh was I anxious) and have settled in well to their new home. Currently am using the small coop although will move them over to the permanent one in a few weeks. Just need to finish fencing the outside of that and around the orchard.
They are so cute, even the 3 sheep came into the shed to have a look see at the new arrivals. Caught it on photos so will put them up once DD has sized them for me.
I think I may just have to get some more eggs and incubate them myself (as in here at home) next time. Feel a bit more confident now.

Thank you Shea and Fluffy Chook, Well I am not quite sure what I have ended up with. Had ordered half a dozen of four different breeds but the end result was 7 chicks. I sent a photo of the chicks to the breeder hoping she might know what breed the chicks look like and although she thinks I might have 3 bovan goldlines and three welsummers as well as 1 barnvelder cockeral, I am not so sure. My friend breeds barnevelders and she insists that I don't have any barnevelders. Shall just have to wait and see what I end up with I guess. It is hard to say with chicks I am assuming so will send photos of the chickens when they are older and fully feathered to see what comes of it. For this lot I really don't mind what they are so long as they all aren't roosters. Kitty
