Ok, been gone a few days, and I guess you are getting hit with some horrible storms, lightening and thunder, wind ? So, up to date here: We are getting hit with one T-storm after another, cracking lightening, gusts of wind to 60 MPH and hail (ice pellets) and it is hitting us first and traveling all across the US creating havoc, floods, tornados. And in the mean time, my Lucille is still on the nest, she eats a bit and drinks and runs amok for about 10 minutes a day if I put her gently off her nest, otherwise she sits there. She is awesome ! I stoled her eggs from her yet again yesterday, while she was out in a well deserved dirt bath, and they all look good, but I am a beginner on candling eggs ! So I re candled the eggs in the incubator and 3 looked bad, my man checked and said yes they looked bad, so we cracked them (I hate this !) and sure enough the first 2 were bad, and the last had a wee chick inside, heart beating and I am so upset still !!!! It died right before us...oh my, I will see this in my dreams forever..a perfect little chick, 15 days in...!!!!! I am so upset ! Still, the rest are back in the incubator, and all is going well, and we are getting very tired of MUD and rain and wind !!! Hope you are all OK< did I send you any weather ?

I may be digging up a painful subject here, but a am curious about what brought down Mike's beloved hen...and exactly how long does a good healthy hen last ? Hope you are all OK, and maybe you can input on this subject ? Exactly what is the life expectancy of a well cared for chook ?

Sorry to hear about the chick , did it once and it feels awful Iv learned ,if they don't smell leave them anything can be going on in there . I like others have also had eggs hatch 3-4 days late ...you never know with chicks Iv got a friend with 2 chooks well past 8 or 9 years but there are so many things that can get them before that . Iv seem friends loose 70 % of stock in a month to a virus and another 8 hens to local careless spraying another patient had 3 hens die in day from a mystery heart thing ,just drop-ed dead no others affected. ???Iv had a couple of other mystery deaths we checked the hens post mortem ,1 we put down to snake bite ?? another on testing showed mineral deficiencies (we have seen several cases) ,Mag,Potassium, selenium ,boron, etc .These birds were getting feed with good balanced food . Problem with animals and people we can get feed all the vits and minerals we need but if one is out of balance ,everything goes out as we need one to absorb another in many cases. Also some animals and people again have systems that for one reason or another are not absorbing properly. If magnesium is out it affects muscles, joints etc and if potassium is out it affects muscles and heart .The list goes on and then a weakness is created in an organ an often and something small can end up killing it .ie a virus ,shock etc. We had to test some run down sheep the other week . They are now being well feed to build them up but were not improving fast and thriving . On testing them they just were not absorbing despite the wonderful food they were given . Fortunately we could do up the homeopathics to help change that .But it would have been an uphill battle

Hi all ! I am back, forgive me that I was gone so long and even now I have to hurry cuz we have to go run errands. My hatch of fertile shipped eggs went bad, half were addled to the point of scrambled eggs, and then I had a bad thermometer which ran my incubator slow, and ended up with a late hatch and high humidity due to all this rain ! It is 65% in my kitchen even as we speak, and humidity in the bator ran up to 87% a few times contributing to the chicks drowning upon pip. 3 did hatch, 1 survived, 1 dropped dead, and another fell out of it's egg with a bloody naval, not ready despite that being day 24 ! This time I am ready-er ! I have 14 fertile Blue Splash Marans eggs I drove over to pick up a few hours drive from here, no addling now, and I ordered more Cuckoo Marans eggs which are being shipped. The rain is tapering off, humidity down, and I have a new incubator and turner, with 3 thermometers and hygrometers, so temp is 99.5 F and humidity is 37% !!!! The little chick that lived is an angel and so lonely that we went to the feed store and bought her a friend, a cornish hen chick...funny ! They are best friends living in a small dog crate with red lamp for heat, in the bedroom.
The eggs under my brooder Lucille BO were all addled from shipping (and I suspect not even fertile) and never hatched so I went back to the feed store and bought her 18 Plymouth Barred Rock pullets ! We slipped them in at night, and Lucille is delighted ! Go to my photobucket, type in Chickie lady and see a short video of broody Lucille ! I will send more piccies later, and how are you all ? Incidently, my e-mail is : fishfreaks@comcast.net ! Bye for now !
