Just as i was about to give up on a clutch of 4 eggs they started to hatch 7 days late!!! One started to hatch and after 2 days was no where near so i helped it out and it seems fine, the other managed on its own, one sadly died unhatched and one is still cooking!! This mum is not quite as doting as the silkie is but maybe its all abit new for her yet !the other chick is 3 weeks old now and is doing well with mums attention. mum is still not keen on the chicks she wont let them get under her and she just sits like she is on an egg still i have to keep lifting h er and putting them under her -the poor things try despiratly but she sits firm---- i took the last egg out and put it with another broody but she does not seem very interested . They are making a big fuss and i have seen them eat a tiny bit but not drink- will they get the hang of it if she does not show them??

The mum should show them how to drink but if she doesn't just dip their little beaks into the water and they will soon get the hang of it. By them way make sure youget rind of any other eggs and then she will start to pay attention to the little chickies

Me too. A frizzle hen hatched one chick, then another two days later and a third three days after that. One egg was left and when I checked later it was infertile. She must have known. I was wondering if it was because she only had four eggs under her. If she had more maybe she wouldn't have been able to tell how many were fertile and whether it was worth sitting some more? In the past with the 8-12 eggs I usually set depending on the size of the hen, I have found most eggs (usually about 7) hatch about the same time and the hen gets off the nest even if some of the remaining eggs are viable. I have countered this to some extent by keeping the hen in a small pen where she has nothing to distract her from continuing to sit on the eggs
