Well I have decided to take the plunge into eating our own cockerals!!! This is a big deal to me since a year ago I would never have even contemplated it and vowed to buy "anonymous" meat under plastic wrap for ever!! But with the help of this site and River Cottage and various other sources, I have toughened up finally!! I have started keeping all the chicks at arms length now to make getting rid of the boys easier. And the decider was after speaking with a friend this morning when offering her my latest batch of boys. We were saying what a shame it is to be giving away my boys to others to eat, we have decided that her hubby will do the nasty (killing) part and then her and I will do the rest and we will share the dressed birds! Im quite excited by the prospect. The Faverolles are lovely meaty cockerals even though they are bantams. The girls started to lay about a month ago so I can set some eggs soon. Boy have I come a long way in a year!!

Good on you! I'm sure the first ones will be hard, but it should get easier as you go! I STILL don't eat our roosters myself, but all the kids and OH do - I just can't bring myself to eat something I knew They tell me that it's the tastiest chicken they ever had though so, like you, I'm going to try and bring myself to eat one one day! At least you know that they had the best life they could - not like the ones that come all wrapped in plastic from the shop!

I know exactly how you feel Wendy, I have said the same overt the last 18 months, but this year I'll be eating our excess roosters and I've even crossed my new hampshire rooster with my light sussex hens and my isabrown hens for meat production, I'll also be doing the same with our lamb and goats once I finish them in about September, it's amazing how your ideas and attitudes change in a relatively short time Good luck, let us all know how you go with it

Well done Wendy, its not really that hard and we ate our first one on Sunday night. I took the legs and wings off, then cut off the breasts and any other bits of meat, i poured my home made tomato sauce over the top and baked in casserole dish, all ingredients except salt and oil from the vegie patch and it was beautiful. Even my daughter who said she wasn't eating them loved it and she was the first to finish.

You will never regret the eating of your birds they taste great. Nothing at all like you get from the shops. You and only you know what you feed them No nasties I do this a lot with beef and lamb duck and chooks for me its the only way to go I take my hat off to you Trev

Well done Wendy. I made the decision a few months ago...I got my boys done by Prestige Poultry ....so they came back looking like supermarket chooks....only trouble is they are still sitting in the freezer..

I rang Prestige Poultry but they said they weren't doing private ones at the moment (rang in January). I am going to try again as we have 3 that need doing now which we can handle but will have 6 more in about a month.
