Hi there- my chook house is nearly finished!! now to find my perfect girls I like the big chunky birds. Though Im open to others. Can you get chickens by them selves? to they need a mother to teach them scratching and other etiquette?? Im in the Dunsborough area. Ive had trouble posting a message so i will try this with out the photo of beautiful chook house.

Hello and welcome! Firstly I'd like to say great chook house!! ;D I'm jealous! If you like big chunky birds, I like (biased 'cos I keep them ) the sussex - you can get them in all sorts of colours - light, buff, speckled, coronation - probably more I can't think of too! If you want babies though, they are fine without a Mum, but you'll need a brooder box until they're bigger, so I'd probably go for pullets if you can! I'll think you'll find everyone here really friendly and a wealth of chooky info! Enjoy!

Hi "Edwards" and welcome. Great to see you have mastered the posting of photos....took me quite a while. You should be able to find plenty of people down your way to provide you with some girls to fill the hen house. Sussex are lovely and so are Wyandottes which also come in lots of colours and can be pretty speccie, like gold laced and silver laced ....for lots of eggs you can go past road island reds or australorps..quite big chooks
love to hear more about what you end up getting

Hi and welcome, edwards I like big chooks, too, when I got my chooks I was also considering getting a buff Orpington (I ended up getting a light sussex, buff sussex and a barnevelder), they are huge and fluffy! Have you browsed this link: www.ithaca.edu/staff/jhenderson/chooks/chooks.html...I've spent hours on that one Enjoy

Thank you every one for the warm welcome. Ive put my first two (hopefully) girls in their pen tonight!! They are araucanas-about 6 weeks old. Ive spoken to someone in donny brook who has some gold lace wyndotte very young chickens- so im thinking about how to keep them warm. Thanks piano chook for the link- im dreaming extensions already!

Hi Cate, a large plastic tub from Red Dot with a clip on bedlamp on the side will do nicely for a brooder. And you can use the traditional shaped,30% less energy lightbulbs from the supermarket, not the spiral ones as they dont give of much heat. Cheers, Wendy

here is a pic of the first two. Araucunas- $14 each with a swap agreement if its a rooster. They were bought localy in dunsborough from an oasis of a garden with extensions every where to house the growing numbers of chooks, ducks, geese turkeys etc And they came with a glass of red!
