Ive got 12 week old ducklings (khaki campbell X mallard), how hard is it to vent sex? Has any one else tried or had any success? I tried to have a look on one tame one, but there is too much fluff to even find the opening, it keeps wriggling which makes it awkward and im too scared I might hurt it. Is it best to not even bother without someone showing me how? Thanks, Kelly

monaro28, I would not bother with vent sexing - this is incredibly hard and don't really know anYone who can do it reliably! If I were you, I'd just wait until I could sex them by age, at 12 weeks you should know pretty soon!

Dont breed khakis or mallards myself but in general with ducks you can sex them by voice usually from about 8 weeks of age. The females will develop their "loud" quack, whereas the males have a much deeper throater quack. Not the best explanation I know, maybe one us duck breeders should do a recording of a male and female quack.....

Vent sexing is very hard to do, I've tried it myself with little reliable success Cluck N Waddle is right the most reliable way is to listen to there voices, the females will have a loud sharp voice, while the males sound like they have a very scratchy sore throat Good Luck I hope that you get the sexes that you're after
