HI All I have put up one post about Sussex pullets now I thought I would let you know what we are about or trying to be about, We live in a small wheat belt town of Doodlakine about 330 kms from Perth door to farm door We have 5.4 hectors about 14 Acres we grow a crop each year to help with the animal food and garden pea hay the Idea is to be as self sufficient as we can, we have ducks, chooks, The Sussex are our breeders, from then we will raise all the young ones for replacement hens or for the table, Guinea fowl, Rhode Island Reds and a couple of odds that wondered in,we would like to start this year with a few rear breeds and lambs my mate next door about 6 Kms away has milkers Dexter's he milks I make Yogurt , Butter and All kinds of cheeses from the raw milk, including Brie, Camembert, Julesburg, Cheddar ,and Caerphilly along with the fresh milk we do fine .I have a large veggie patch that was the hardest thing to get going with the hot weather and the wind its a young garden only three years old it will improve with time we are retired and fill in our days nicely, its a great community we live in although shrinking only about 300 of us mainly wheat and sheep anyone thinking of retiring we can recommend Kellerberrin and Doodlakine as the place Kellerberrin has everything you need to survive and that's just down the road. The name Quambie wae the name of the farm we bought it was rundown not lived in for a lot of years it took us a while to renovate it that's about us all wrapped up. trev

Thats sounds great Trev. I can imagine how hard the vegies would be to keep going in this heat with not much water. Would love to see some photo's. I grew up in the country, Calingiri, and that's why I like living in Kalamunda. Close to everything but a bigger block and lots of nature.

Wow! Sounds like you're on your way to being all set up to be self sufficient! What a fantastic way to live - I am jealous! Good luck with your poultry and other ventures - and yes, pics would be lovely!

Sounds like your living the "The Good Life", Ikbok isn't the only jealous one around here! If you haven't already found it www.aussieslivingsimply.com.au has a great forum, lots of people having a go at being more self reliant from backyarders to much more serious ventures. I'm off to water my little vegi patch and pretend I'm a real farmer :-) Ashley
