I've just had 8 khaki Campbell ducklings hatch yesterday. Does anyone know why some are light brown and some darker brown? I've been told it doesn't mean some are male and some female.

Hi Monaro, What you may find is that one of the parents is split for both dark and khaki, I've just bred some of my dark campbell ducks with my khaki drake, so I've got a mix of both colours, and that means that the ducklings are split for both colours aswell. I hope this makes sense!!

I think so, does that mean the lighter ones are khaki campbells and the darker ones dark campbells? Is one colour recessive? Also some have stripes on their heads across their eyes and some don't, does that mean anything? So I guess there is no way to tell which are boys and girls? Thanks for your help, Kelly

Hi Kelly, the stripes throught the eyes suggest that one of the parents has mallard in it. If you can upload a photo of the ducklings I'll be able to give you a better idea then the lighter ones will be khaki, and the darker ones will be dark campbells. Neither of which should have a stripe through the eyes. You will be able to sex them at about 4-6 weeks of age as you'll notice the voices sound different Cheers Brendon

I'll try to put a good pic up. Should I be selling the dark ones as dark campbells and the others as khaki campbells? Would you not classify them as purebred? Thanks for your help

I wouldn't class them as purebred, it might be best to sell them as backyard pets that way you shouldn't have any problems. To an experienced breeder they will be able to breed the mallard colours out of it but it will take some time It might pay to sell them once they are almost fully feathered up, that way you'll know exactly how they look. If you post a photo of them I'll be able to give you a better idea

ok the mother is a definate Khaki Campbell, the Dad is unfortunately a mallard ! He is a very nice mallard at that, the Khaki drake looks almost identical to the duck but his head is a deep chocolate brown. When I get home tonight I'll get a photo of my Khaki Drake and post it for you so that you can see how dramatically different that they are. Given the fact that you had the 2 different colours ducklings I'd say that the mother is split for both Khaki & Dark, but you won't know for sure until you breed her with a khaki drake. Did you buy them as a pure breed pair??

but in saying that the ducklings are very cute and they will still make nice pets for someone but I'd recommend selling them as Khaki x Mallard to avoid problems with potential buyers.

A mallard! Cross breeds! Oh no! I thought I had 8 beautiful pure little khakis! Oh well they are still the cutest things I have ever seen! I bougt both the parents seperately and they were sold to me as khaki campbells. Aren't mallard drakes supposed to have a ring round their necks and from the books I've read I thought khaki drakes are supposed to have a green head?
