Wondered if maybe we could do some comparative pricing on those green and white poultry feeders/waterers. I'm looking to switch some of my pens to auto feeders and get some bigger waterers ready for summer so have started researching some prices. Have looked on Ebay but after you pay postage it's probably almost the same as buying one from the shop(?). So I wondered if anyone knew some prices on these feeders/waterers from places in the Perth area? I'm looking at something around a 5kg feeder and maybe an 8ltr waterer.

I researched earlier and found the same thing, by the time you paid postage you may as well have gone to a shop. Only thing is that it is delivered to your door and saves on fuel.

Just thought I'd update this thread I ended up getting 12L waterers from my stockfeeds (Gidge Rural) for $30.50 each, which is a great price.

now here comes a real newbie question do you change the water every day or do you just make sure it's still clean and top it up? I was just wondering because 12lt is quite big, but then again you've got a lot of chooks, I suppose.

Lots of chooks is an understatement lol I fill them right up on a hot day and find that especially with the pens that contain ducks too, that the water just manages to last through the day. So then the next morning I tip out the last bit of water and refill. On the cooler days I only half fill the waterers, which usually isnt all gone by the end of the day so the next morning if its still clean I top it up but if its a bit grotty (the ones in the duck/chook combo pens usually are) then I clean and refill it. I find the 12L waterers a good size as if I'm going out for the day I know that the birds definately wont run out of water. Whereas when I was using 5ish litre waterers, they needed to be topped up during the day otherwise they would run dry on a summer day.

I've taken to only using the automatic feeders when I go away for a few days. I find they get algae in them and take a lot of cleaning when used regularly. I now give mine clean water every day. May not be necessary but makes me feel good. I do the same with food. Only automatic when I'm away. I don't like the green and white ones. If you leave them in the sun they get brittle and break up. I make my own feeders with tins and big jars. Mike

I use a 200 litre drum of water that in turn flows into there own water container in each pen with its own float system that holds around 5 litres as they drink it fills up I wash them out every month I found that's enough the 200 litre container is dark blue and I have it enclosed with a dark green shade cloth and its under a large tree to keep the sun off it as much as I can and it seems to keep the water cooler I have to top up the main tank every three weeks and a bit more often in high summer. When I get the pens to there last resting place each with there own outdoor run I will change the tank to the 1000 litre one I have ready for them this one stays in the shed away from the heat and direct sunlight if it works as well as the 200 litre one I will be happy the 1000 litre tank is off white I have thought of giving it a coat of dark coloured paint just a thought at this stage. As for there feeders I use some cut down guttering I block off each end I always have food in there when I go away I fill it up for them and there is always food left when I get back Trev
