How does everyone keep their duck pond clean? We get alot of algae growing even though it has a pump and filter. I read that you can put pool chlorine in but I'm a bit scared to do that. Does anyone else put chlorine in? Is it really safe for ducks and ducklings and how much? Thanks, Kelly

We have natural running water that flows through our pen into a liner, then out again. Whenever there is a tiny bit of algae the ducks eat it. I would think that your filter would do the same as my flowing water. I don't think chlorine would be any good for the ducks.

I agree that chlorine would be no good for ducks! (although I don't keep them! ) I get algae in my chook water though and put a bit of apple cider vinager in it and it seems to keep the algae down.

No I wouldnt put chlorine in their water. You could try a bacterial solution from a pond store. I dont know much about them, but they would have to be safer than chemical control.

I only had a small wading pool and just changed the water. The yuk water is great for the garden.

I use a small amount of chlorine in my ducks pond, I use it at 10% of the dosage rate for a swimming pool, it doesn't eradicate the algae completely but it helps control it, I've also found that a small amount of chlorine also stops mozzies from laying there eggs in it. If you don't want to use chlorine, another option that you can try is, creating a shade structure over the pond, if you reduce the level of sunlight that reaches the water, not only does it keep it cooler, it also reduces the amount of algae in the water. If you do use chlorine, please ensure that oyu use the liquid form, as the granulated can take a little while to dissolve properly, and if they can find it the ducks will eat it.
