Hi,
I have been given a Maino incubator model MPS24A which was made in 2004 , does anyone else have one which they could fax or email me the instructions for? It appears to be fan forced and auto turn it is in a plastic box with a fine metal grill and a rack similar to an oven rack. Does the fine mesh grill go under the rack and the rack then have the metal rod from the motor going threw it to turn the eggs. Do the eggs just lie on the rack on their sides?
Also should I get a candler and can anyone recommend a brand of lamp for a brooder?
as you can see this is all new to me? I have a book called rasing chickens to give me an idea though
regards
andrew

Hi Andrewh, sorry can't help you with the incubator, but having a candler is something you should have as you can save yourself time and cleaning up from exploded eggs......phew!!!!!!!! I use a normal dolphin type torch and place a piece of cardboard over the end with a small hole in it. Works very well, but you can buy ones from ebay and poultry shops. As for a lamp for the brooder you can use a bedside lamp or a suspended light with a heat generating type globe.

I cant help with the Maino incubator either Andrew. Have you googled it to find some info? For a candler, I use a little led torch. Really bright light so works great and they're pretty cheap. You can buy them in the supermarket or hardware store. For the brooder, I use a reptile lamp cord with a ceramic end (dont use something with a plastic globe socket as they are not designed for use 24/7 so can cause a fire) and at the moment am just using the old fashioned light globes that are getting phased out. Will soon be switching to ceramic heat emitter though, as they last much longer and only emit heat not light (bright light can cause 'pecking' problems with the chicks). Hopefully someone will be able to help you out with your incubator

Thanks Fuffy chook and cluck n waddle for your info found the mainpro supplier in australia and they have provided me with the instructions for the unit its a 24 semi auto fan forced worth a bob or two new , hopefully it works ok i'll test it tomorrow and then see about getting a couple of dozen eggs going.
RE Brooder. I used to have a reptile ceramic light but got rid of it, still have a reptile heat mat and a reptile heat coil (long plastic heating element looks like washing line along with a thermostate to control them. Wondering if they would work okay heating from floor rather than above or i could try and supend them above in something and insulate above them I am thinking . Your thoughts anyone?
regards
Andrew

Hi Andrew, the reptile heaters should be good for them. I havent used them. Just make sure they can move away from the heat source if they get too warm. Cheers, Wendy

I think it would be better if you could heat from above rather than from the floor, just as it would be if they were with a mother hen. I havent had anything to do with the heat coils or mats so I don't know how they would go being suspended but it's certainly worth a try if it saves you spending money on other heating options

I use a ceramic heat lamp (reptile )that I got on Ebay .In-fact Ive bought 4.They are supplied with 60 w Heat bulbs supplied free if you buy 2 or more ceramic lamps a $10 each. Also from the same site I buy a dimmer plug for them .These are great as you can adjust way down if you have a high powered heat lamp ,also bulbs last longer if you don't run Them at full capacity.I have one in the shed suspended from the roof with a 275 w bulb running a 1/4 power

Mine is a ceramic lamp holder and I have the free 60w red heat bulb they provide with it .Those look good though .The trouble with heat bulbs is they are much hotter than ordinary bulbs and you need to be able to control it .Iv never used the others Id be interested to know how they go .The people who I got mine from come and go from ebay ,I v got them also for a friend .I just waited for them to come back on.OK if you have time

Shea, thats the ones Im planning to switch to. More expensive yes, but they last a very long time. Thats a good price for a ceramic holder annieyokie I used those red lights a while back but they both blew within 2 weeks and thats put me off them. Maybe it was just the brand I used?

The first ones I used did blow fast that is why I now use the dimmer on them as it preserves the life of all globes if you dont use them at full power .When mine do go I will try the ceramic globes to see how they go.

Thanks annieyolkie,
ordered two lamps tonight and the dimmer switch.
My incubator seems to be working well and I got 18 Gold laced Wyandotte eggs and 6 Anconas on the go. Have made a small cone candler for checking the eggs. Would you reccommend checking them at day 6?
Also do you ever have any fertile Light Sussex eggs for sale?
:DJust one more thing do you preventatively treat your birds. I have had birds for several months and never wormed or de liced them, they seem happy emnough but wondering if i should? Your thoughts and anyone elses appreciated.
thanks once again
Andrew
