Hi everyone! I have had some problems since the last Wyandotte chick hatched. That one and 4 Polish since have been hatched with a leg problem, either 1 or both legs fused at hock joint. Or they start off ok and then it progresses to the same. I have been completely deveastated with having to put these chicks down I had some chicks due this week, more Pekins and a couple of Buff bantam Faverolles from the lady I bought the last lot of Pekin eggs from. The first Pekin chick had the same problem, but the others who have hatched since appear to be fine. Thanks goodness! the last 2 a Pekin and Fav have had leg probs but not the same. The Fav had a bit of splayed leg, but after a day and night in teh bator on non slip foam, hes looking great and Ive put him in with the other 2 chicks. The Pekin that hatched last has the problem of his legs going straight out in front, but Ive taped them so it pulls them back again. I will leave him like this for the day in the incubator ans hopefully he will be fine. I have had another couple of chicks with this problem and theyre running around the yard now So whatever it was that caused the fused joints seems to have passed. I was thinking it was viral arthritis or something, but I may never know. Long as it doesnt come back! I should have another healthy batch of Polish in the brooder but Ive only got 1! There are more eggs in the incubator now due in a fewweeks though. I will post some pics of the new arrivals soon as I get a chance. Cheers, Wendy

Hi Wendy, I was reading your thread on BYP. Sounds like you've been having a horrible time. Glad things seem to be going ok now. Fingers crossed any future ones will be perfect.

:DHi Wendy ' That is so sad its hard if anything happens to our babies . I'm sure you know that most leg problems are uneven heat or Vit D deficiency.in the hens .Most animals and people today are having problems producing vit D. A Vit D Deficiency is also often precursor to Arthritis I have had a couple of posted eggs hatch with curled toes (definitely a vit B or vit D problem) .Ive been doseing them up and they are starting to straiten. :Hope the next batch are all healthy little babies.

Hey Wendy sounds like you have had a bad run lately. Some one once told me that you can used vegimite for a vitamen B source...which I used once (mixed a teaspoon of vegimite in a glass of water ) and seem to work fine...You could give it a try till you get some soluble stuff

:)Hi Wendy ,I use some People vit d watered down and homeopathic Vit D for Absorption .Send me a PM with your Address and phone no Ill tell you how to use it and send you some .Lakelands is right about vit B is in vegemite but not much Vit D .Vegemite or Vegie spred (from woolworths -less yeast )is a great pick me up for sick hens mixed with water or mixed with water rolled oats and garlic if they are eating. Vit d is found in fish oil ,(cod liver oil) in liver and in grass feed hens eggs (providing they are not deficient in it.)This is also why its often recommended that sick hens are feed cooked mashed eggs.
