Hi, On Monday a friend rang and was commiserating about a lousy hatch rate and he thought it was to do with all the thunder etc we had on Friday, supposedly he has been getting really good hatch rates previously. I really didn't think it would matter. BUT My eggs hatch date is today. Normally 75% of the eggs have already hatched the day before and the chicks are just drying out today and waiting on the stragglers. but no chicks hatched yesterday at all, and so far only a couple have hatched, and I always have a good hatch rate with the purebreds. Maybe there is a problem when there is a lot of thunder and lightning. Is there anyone else that is hatching at the moment. Would love to hear how you are going.

I have heard about that actually. Something to do with radiation. A friend used to breed budgies, and after a storm, the mother budgie would push most of the eggs out of the nest so maybe it's the same thing with chickens?

Well they have finally hatched, 2 days late, 2 died before they could hatch and only 26 out of 40 hatched, I usually get between 80 and 90% hatch rate, so something was definitely not right. Maybe it is radiation or something from the storm, even a mum budgie knows somethings wrong

These are the chicks that hatched. They all seem healthy and so far are doing well despite their belated arrival

I have 7 Araucana bantam chics, 1 Pekin in the hot brooder with the others, 1 Pekin almost out of the shell and 1 Pekin running around the bator. All cute lil buggars. It is freakie the toes on the Pekins, they look like Crab claws
