Hi Tina I dont need to put pictures on!!!! ,it must have heard me because this morning when i let them out it stopped at the top of the ladders and did about 3 really loud crows!! and he seems to be trying to do what roosters do best to the other silkie!! Do you remember if they were from the same clutch? i dont really want to get rid of it but will it "do" all the chickens? Will i end up with mutant chicks? I had not really planned on having a rooster but we have got fond of them and My little boy thinks the other silkie will miss him if we get rid of him.really dont quite know what to do .

It is good to know that you were correct in thinking it was male, this will help you learn to sex them, but as you see they can fool you. They were from the same hatch, but could have different mothers. I would not be concerned about them mating and you will not finish up with mutant chicks at all. A lot of breeders breed back to the chicks parents to improve lines. If you are happy to keep him great and he will service all your hens no problem, but I owe you a pullet. I don't have any at the moment, but I maybe able to source one in the next few days that is similar colour. I will let you know soon. Poultry are social animals and do have their 'friends' or ones they hang out with. This can be the same breed or another breed. I have had a couple of silkie roosters who used to hang out with the light sussex and would get very upset if they could not perch next to them. If you do decide to part with him your little girl will get over it and find a new friend, how well does she get on with the pekins?

thanks - they all get on but they do stick in their own pairs and sleep in very separate pairs at night. Is it ok to keep a rooster with them all the time ,and what would a silke mixed with a pekin look like ?Also do roos tend to get agressive as they get older -i have so much to learn!!

Yes you can keep the rooster with them at all times, I do and as for aggresive, it purely depends on the individual bird, same as how loud they crow. Silkie roosters are not usually known for being aggresive which is why they are recommended as poultry for children. Having said that it is always wise to watch them with young children as they can be fine with adults and older children but find little ones un-nerving. I have never seen a pekin x silkie, maybe google it and you will find some images.
