Hi Everyone, Sorry i haven't been on here the last few weeks, as I told Wendy yesterday, I've lost almost all of my birds due to a mystery illness. I've been losing them at a rate of about 3-5 per day, we started out with about 70 birds, and in the last 3 weeks have been reduced to around 15, i've had blodd samples and tissue analysis doe by my vet, and as far as testing goes, they are fine. They are all fine in the morning, none showing any telltale signs of illness, and by the afternoon, there are several dead, I've removed all the bodies straight away, and burned the carcasses to prevent anything spreading further, but at this point I'm lost fo answers:( Has anyone else had any unexplained losses???

Hi Brendon, I thought maybe you could post on BYP. There are a few vets and Poultry health experts with tons of experience lurking on there. They may be able to shed some light on this. forum.backyardpoultry.com/ I really hope you can find some answers. You must be completely shattered.

Just a thought, have you checked for toxic plants or maybe even poisons. What about spiders in the coops? Anything changed from before. I know you probably have done all this but I had to try.

Ross (OH)and practitioner) says it sounds like it could be heart related as they are dying in the afternoon with no prior symptom's .Could be a selenium deficiency and or coxsackie type virus( not tested for in blood ) .

Hi everyone, I've heard from aniokie, and it seems that it was all due to a mineral deficiency, so I'll be getting a mineral block from the feed store, and giving to them. I've never crossed thisproblem before, but I've also only had chooks for about 18mths so I've got alot to learn obviously. Does anyone else provide mineral supplements to there chooks??

i would be interested in this too, what type of minerals? i just recently had a similar problem but with my pet sheep, she had got a viris she couldnt shake coz she was low in copper and cobalt, she got a injection of these minerals and some antibotics now she is much better and ready to join her other sheep friends.
