I have some chicks that hatched a week ago and a couple of them have a stiff knee on one of their legs. The leg wont straighten out properly. They look like a seagull standing on one leg....The feet and toes are ok
Has any one come across this before and is so is it treatable .
So far I have just been doing a bit of chickie physio...gently straightening the leg out as much as I can and massaging gently

Is the "knee" (actually the ankle) always crooked out at an odd angle? If so it may be a slipped achilles tendon and it is very hard to correct once it has been allowed to stay that way for a while. The only way I have heard people correct it is to apply a chick brace onto the leg to hold it into a straight line until the tendon stays put. If it is simply a swelling at the joint it could possibly be derived from infections taken in through the egg yolk or the egg yolk wound after they hatched. Pictures would help a lot

I will see if I can get a picture that close up...the top of the leg is in line where it should be but just bend . doesn't seem to be swollen even just really stiff and wont completely straighten out even when I put gentle pressure on it...when the chick stands up the leg points at a right angle from the middle of the leg(ankle / knee whatever.) straight out in front of it.
cheers for the advise so far.

d**n, that is a shame. I hope the rest are ok. PS - It is confusing with the knee, ankle thing. Birds are weird animals

Thanks Matt I know you're right LOL. I just think in the middle of the leg is a knee..... Only the other one little chickie still has the problem...Massaging and Physio is now working and the bottom half of the leg is starting to twist to the outside a bit. I thought I might try bracing the leg with a straw. What do you think
