Marg, who is from a long line of farmers, says " Put the axe next to the hen shed " so they know what will happen if they don't lay soon"

So he had put a fake rubber axe next to the chook house so that if Marg went past the chook house she would see it and think that Bill had done what she said to do like the good husband that he is.

Marg, was not fooled, she knew her Bill very well, so instead of confronting him with the evidence she thought she would try a trick of her own.

Marg replaced the fake rubber axe with a real one and took all the chickens out of the coup.

to Bills absolute horror all that he could see was a real axe and a very empty coup with a dozen eggs scattered randomly around.

Bill searched frantically for his beloved chooks but then thought "Marg is up something here" because How did the eggs that I bought get into the chook house.
