Yes, a shame, I wont be taking any lame birds because I feel sorry for them, thats for sure Here is what the Mod on BYP said. It gives me hope the others may be ok- If they are healthy I wouldn't worry about the others, personally - although I can understand if you think differently. I assume that all my birds have been exposed to mareks anyway. It doesn't mean that they'll get the symptoms, although there's always that chance. Mareks is so common, that I don't think you can ever totally avoid it under normal circumstances. I would just be careful to keep those birds away from any young chicks that are vulnerable to catching it. The older birds should have a good resistance to it. Have you spoken to the breeder at all? It would be helpful to know if there are other birds coming down with it, or if this is the only one. Usually you hear of people getting one bird go down with Mareks, but no others. Last year I lost one rooster to mareks, out of 100 birds. No others had any symptoms. I assume there's birds here that have it. I raise chicks separate from older birds that might pass it on. Then on occasions you hear of lots of birds in a flock going down with it, but that's rare. I wonder if that is a different strain, but I don't know. I think it would be worth contacting the breeder and asking if other birds have come down with it. That might give you some information that helps you decide what to do.

I have also contacted the man I got them off and let him know. What he does is another story. He was selling most of them due to work committments.

What a shame, did you manage to speak to the previous owner? Work commitments or not he is selling diseased birds, not good.

I sent him this email and then I phoned him to get some more background on the birds at his place. He was horrified. he said that a couple of other birds were like this one but came good. I dont know if that is what actually happened though. I told him again not to sell the birds for a few months. At that stage I didnt know how long the virus could hang around for. I tried to be courteous and not rude in any way in my email as he could have genuinely thought they had been injured - I am just writing to tell you I have had it unofficially confirmed that the chook has Mareks, we are putting her down tomorrow. How are your other birds doing? The others she was with could be carrying it. Here is some more info for you www.dpi.qld.gov.au/cps/rde/dpi/hs.xsl/27_2741_ENA_HTML.htmIf Iwas you, I wouldnt sell any more birds for a few months to make sure theyre in the clear otherwise it could spread and put peoples flocks at risk as has happened with me. Good luck and take care , Wendy

Nothing wrong with that email Wendy. A lot of people in your position would probably have been a lot less polite.

i think people have to be told as some have no idea what is wrong and just see it as a ill bird with no clue of the disease ..i had never even heard of it till all my silkies became ill but i never knew they could be resistant as they were older i was advised by the ag dept that it would be best to have them all destroyed and the pen scrubbed out which i did so hard to do though i only had 4 roo;s left at that stage but my neighbour came to put them down and they ran up to me and one sat on my foot i felt soo evil i will never forget my babies
