That's excellent news Wendy, you've done well to get them to lay at the moment, I haven't heard of any duck owners getting eggs yet so you have some very special ducks

Remember to do a float test on your eggs before you crack them. You do not want any nasty smelly surprises. But the chances are they are all pretty fresh. Has your little girls silkie laid yet?

Yep I will do that Fluffy. Good idea. We have been getting an egg every day or other day since the first egg from Stormy. None from Snowy at this stage. I did take a snap of the kids eating their first eggs so I will upload over the next few days. Probably at the same time I put on photos of my new Polish which Im picking up tomorrow!!! YAY!!! 1 more sleep

Good to hear you have your first duck eggs .They can be very clever when it comes to hiding them even in a small area .You will find that the eggs will get bigger as the ducks get older. Some of the eggs from Pekins can be very large .I hope you like cooking as they can lay up to 200 a year.

That's great news Wendy. Before you know it, you'll be giving them away. My duck/s have been laying every couple of days but where they are laying them they are rolling into the pond. I don't know how to get them to lay in the nest or maybe the chooks won't let them in there to do it? Maybe I need another nest box where they are currently laying them.

lol Ray I do like cooking and we eat alot of eggs. I go through one of those Margaret River 18 pack small eggs about every week. Wow so we have the potential for 600 duck eggs a year!! Those alone would do us probably! Also with the chook eggs, I might have enough to flog to workmates every now and then to go towards feed. Also I might have to hatch some more babies to sell in Spring. I just love ducklings

Shea, I think you should try putting a nest box where they are currently laying with an egg in it. Nothing to lose and it might work.

One theory is most ducks lay their eggs before 10am .So you keep them in a small area and let them out after that .However some ducks can't tell the time , so it might not work with all of them .

My ducks dont go to bed when it goes dark as the neighbors back light shines into their pen until they turn it off later. They wont sleep in their shed either or for that matter, lay eggs in teh old doghouse inside the shed which I made for a nest box. They have their own ideas so I just let them go for it

That's great new Wendy before you know it you will have more eggs thatn you can possible eat or incubate and you will have to start giving them away (or selling them ) of course. I haven't had a duck egg for years but I think I remember them being a lot different in taste to chook eggs so would live to hear how your first taste test goes. I am going to try my first goose egg this weekend, I will only need 1 egg to make enough scrambled eggs for the 3 of us...LOL
