I haven't got any photos yet but I just HAD to put this post up, I am so amazed I found some!! Picked up a pair of Mandarin Ducks today from a lovely lady in Wattle Grove. I was in Broome over Easter so I had to get her to hold them for me from Thursday but it was worth the convincing! Will post some pics when I can Soooo Happy!

Photo isnt too flash as they are very shy, hopefully with time they will be a bit more friendly They have been pinioned, which I wouldn't do by choice but its already been done. This means part of one wing is removed so they can't fly. We have named him "Conquerer" lol but no name for her yet, suggestions welcome

They are AWESOME Judes I know that the idea of pinioned wings seems cruel, but it doesn't hurt them, all my mallards are pinioned, and it doesn't bother them in the slightest , and I'm pretty sure that if you own mandarin ducks, they have to be pinioned again very nice birds ;D ;D :

oooh juDES WHEN CAN I PUT IN A ORDER THEY ARE SO LOVELY LET ME KNOW IF YOU ARE BREEDING THEM I AM SURE YOU WILL HAVE A HARD TIME KEEPING UP WITH THE ORDER AND THE WING THINGY SOUNDS TERRIBLE I WOULD NOT DO IT EITHER BUT AT LEAST THEY WON'T FLY AWAY

Well I am working on setting up a really nice enclosure for them, I will do my best to breed them but apparently it can be difficult so I will be building a pond with a hollow log overhanging (this is supposed to be one of their preferred nesting sites) as well as landscaping thier pen with reeds and bushes as they become very shy when breeding. Also feeding can play a big part, I have read that alot of people who attempt to breed them fail because they have them too fat. So until spring they will get alot of greens, wheat, sorghum and a little corn, and then as it warms up supplement them with insects, fish, chick crumbles and budgie seed. Wish me luck I'll probably need it!! If anyone has other information or personal experience I would love to have some input
