Good luck with the land hunting beck, i wish you well. I've been looking at about 5 acres in the rockingham, Mandura area and need to win lotto first. With a bit of luck this Saturday. My neighbour hasn't complained about my roosters yet, but i do try and keep on the good side of him. He knows that i've got them but reckons that he hasn't heard them yet. I reckon that he's a very sound sleeper. I've got no neighbours behind me and the other side in about 100 metres away, so with a bit of luck they won't hear them.

Hi Beck, ignore the council, I've discovered a few tricks about dealing with those pathetic pencil pushers, ( apologies to anyone who is a council worker ), you won't have anything to worry about as I'm in Bakers Hill and everyone here has roosters, the council might try and push 1 person around, but they will not take on 20+ What part of town where you looking at ?

How frustrating beck, I hate real estate agents hehe (no offence to anyone here who might be one ) You could always come and join us out here in Toodyay. Plenty of hobby farms with roosters out here

Well doesn't that just take the cake. Maybe the real estate agent wants that block for him/herself. Wouldn't put it past them, that way they can get the purchaser to drop the price based on "no-one" wanting to see the block. Well any way good luck. Sounds like Bakers Hill is a great area and you will have support of other residents who are cshook lovers too. I'm sure 6 acres will not be enough LOL once you get started. My 3 acres is fast becoming not enough but I doubt we would ever move

Thanks guys for all your support !! THANKS also luv4ducks that makes me feel better i was looking at a block on the new development on cook road just inside town and thought to check on the chook policy first i have to register to keep more than 20 chooks and apply to have any roosters or even livestock ..She was also saying that i have to buy the block then apply and can still get knocked back and i told her i was trying to save wasting money and time lol seems mad coz i thought ooh Bakers looks nice still lots of people that still wave hello to you and has a nice country feel still no takeout mobs and large shopping centers either ideal

ignore the person that you spoke to, I have the northam shire's bylaws regarding poultry at work and as long as you are 5km's or more from the town center, you can have as many chooks as you like and you can also have as many roosters as you like, the only thing that you have to be careful about is pigs, everything else there is nothing that they can do. I'm on 5.5 acres and there is plenty of room for us here, I can't see us needing to move, so hopefully 6 acres will be suitable for you, if you'd like a copy of the bi-laws let me know.

also they never stated in the bilaws what town centre so it leaves the laws open for interpretation, which is what the rangers have told me. Chin up, I'm sure you'll find a suitable solution for yourselves in the near future

How can a shire council not state to a prospective buyer what a block of land can be used for.The guide lines and rules should already be in place. What is the point of buying a hobby farm/ acreage and then to be told what you can or can't do.I think a visit to the local shire office would be a good idea.Real estate agents don't work for anybody but themselves and always question any thing they might tell you.

I agree with rap, asking the receptionist on the phone will get you nowhere, and relying on advice from a realestate agent isn't good either, they will tell you what they think they need to aslong as they get the sale! If you do want further information ring the ranger services, and confirm all queries with them, but as I said I'm happy to email you a copy of the bilaws for you to see it for yourself. Either way you'll have plenty of support in dealing with council's on here I'm sure! I know from personal experience that councils are all talk no action!

Thanks that gives me more info than they did and i did ignore the real estate she was no help at all not even going to help me look at the block I was interested in !!! Also when i rang the council i spoke to about 3 people and the main lady that told me all the info about applying for permits etc is the environmental officer and she said she was reading directly from the bi laws about poultry and livestock but if you live in Bakers luv4ducks and you say to ignore it i feel heaps better . What is going on when you can't have a couple of chooks on almost 6 acres it is rediculous she said that it disturbs the neighbors because people always put it on the boundary fence which i have to admit i was looking at putting it down the back but would of insulated it and everything and she asked if i sold them and i said yes sometimes and she said i need a permit for that too MADNESS it was such a waste of my time i think it would be better to ring the ranger and i would love a copy of the bi-laws luv4ducks at least i can see if she was pulling my leg thanks for all your help !

beck the 20 figure is a state govt imposed limit, not a local govt imposed limit. its set by the health dept apparently. for larger blocks and to make sure you are not having an industry set up thats why you are supposed to apply for a permit to have more than 20 birds. however, this rule is very rarely applied anywhere, especially in rural communities, if that is any help to you. i think the local shires (i don't know just guessing here) are supposed to administer that ruling, hence you will find it in the policy structures what a convoluted world we live in just to have few chickens !!
