Im more confused of the 8 eggs Iv hatched from the mottled roo 3 are black With some mottleing and will go black I know , the other 5 are looking to be mottled or flashy . I'm presuming the hens who are laying are carrying the mo gene for this to occur The father of all the hens that are now laying was black-ish in appearance .All his feathers were all black on the tips but was white 1/2 way down to his body.Im assuming he must have carried the gene as the mums of the new hens were a mix of colours. Anyone??

i have found that when teh chicks are carrying mottling they start out with mottled looking feathers but that this fades to black as the chick moults to its adult feathers. if you get mottled adult birds from your hatch then one of hte black hens is carrying the mottled gene, or is split for mottled. its hard to tell from your description what the genotype of hte parent birds were, but if he had a mottled gene, there is a 25% chance that one of his offspring could have the mottled gene too. i hope this helps some. btw, the book has sold out

Thanks Jacquie . :)I thought that !The hens that have produced these chicks did have mottling as chicks that disappeared . I thought they may have been carrying the gene but their fathers history is a mystery to me .Two of the new chicks are definitely going to be mottled adults others not so sure .I now have mottled hens so Ill have a good mottle collection soon. Its a great book ,I read it and read it and am starting to get some of it .The hard thing is working out who is carrying what especially when you don't know the history.
