hi there, does anyone cut their chooks toenails? My 2 silkies look like they could do with it. I was just going to use peoples nail clippers. This should be ok? I have always been too nervous to do Rayzas nails and the vet does it. I dont think I'll take the girls down to get their nails clipped, I'll do it myself. ;D

People nail clippers would be fine, or dog nail clippers also work well Just have some cornflour on hand, incase you accidentally cut too short and they bleed.

Yeah i have cut them on my chickens when they get old and lazy ( some are ex battery ) i use the dog clippers coz they got the hole i find them easier to use as you can see how much you are chopping by what you put thru the hole and are less likely to slip and like cluck says the cornflower to stop the bleeding works wonders

like the others i use dog clippers on the nails and you just need to watch for the quick which is hard to do with silkies.................just remember little at a time rather than one big cut, and you should be right.

Yeah jacquie i also use dog clippers i find them easier and i always have a bar of soap handy ( instead of cornflour ) it is easy to fill the nail just by dragging it along the bar of soap

I have never cut any toenails. Does any one know if you need to do that to show them.

you need to clip the toe nails if they are getting too long, some breeds, eg silkies and pekins, are susceptible to long toes nails and they begin to curl and twist..............doesn't look pleasant at all and can interfere with the bird being able to walk properly.
at shows, the nails should be short and neat, and where it will makea difference is if there are two birds of comparable quality and one is well grooomed and the other isn't...........the well groomed bird will win.
